Swampland 2011: "Crossing the Creek" and The Year of Alabama Music

Happy New Year to all you Swamplanders. I apologize for the long hiatus between this post and my last one, but the holidays caught me off guard, and I was running in place for about six weeks. My resolution for 2011 is to complete tasks in a timely fashion.

I am happy to annouce that I just recorded seven of my Swampland pieces for WLRH Huntsville Public Radio, and they will be aired from time to timed during this coming year on 89.3 FM. I am grateful to public radio (and public television) because without the public media, life in the rural south would be the "Sahara of the Bozarts" that H. L. Mencken declared it to be in 1917.

Fortunately, the desert has blossomed. As Dr. Louis D. Rubin, Jr. declared in The Literary South, within a decade of the end of WW I the South "had overnight been transformed into a literary garden." We continue to reap the harvest of that flourishing garden.

This week it is my pleasure to review Crossing the Creek: The Literary Friendship of Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings by Anna Lillios, associate professor of English at the University of Central Florida. This slim volume is rich in literary history and personal insight into the lives of two amazing southern women who helped change the face of the literary south.

Not only is literature in the forefront in 2011, so is music. 2011 is The Year of Alabama Music, and numerous events are planned around the state of Alabama along the Alabama Music Trail.

To pay homage to Alabama Music, Swampland is pleased to present a series of features on Alabama music by journalist Jane DeNeefe. DeNeefe recently published--along with renowned journalist Frye Gaillard and history instructor Jennifer Lindsay--- Alabama's Civil Rights Trail: An Illustrated Guide to the Cradle of Freedom.

However, one of DeNeefe's first loves is music. She has written about one of Alabama's first racially integrated bands "Ivy Joe and the Snowballs" as well as Huntsville blues legend Microwave Dave, and she authored the article in the Encyclopedia of Alabama on the unforgettable Jerry "Boogie" McCain.
