Alabama Designer Billy Reid Wins Prestigious CFDA Fashion Award

Vogue magazine has announced that Alabama clothing designer Billy Reid has received the 2010 CFDA Fashion Fund award. The award, now in its 7th year, was presented at the annual CFDA awards gala in New York City on November 16. The winner of this prestigious award receives $300,000 for his/her business plus a one-year mentorship with a leading industry professional to help provide a sustainable path to success. This award was created by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to mentor emerging American design talent. In addition to designer Billy Reid, the two runners-up for the award were jewelry designer Eddie Borgo and fashion designer Prabal Gurung. Both will receive $100,000 and mentorship. Those in the winners' circle were also presented with specially commissioned bronze awards created by Rachel Feinstein.

The award dinner was presided over by key speakers Karl Lagerfeld and Carey Mulligan and drew such fashion icons such as Alexa Chung, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Anna Paquin, Christina Ricci, Leighton Meester, Chanel Iman, a legion of world famous designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Carolina Herrera, and last year's Fashion Fund winner, Sophie Theallet.

In an interview with Billy Reid, Vogue Daily asked Reid why he chose to live in Alabama rather than in New York City, the traditional home of high fashion.

Reid replied, "Well, we’re actually here in New York quite a bit, so I consider myself a part-time New Yorker. But you know my wife is from Alabama, so for a while, before we even started with this whole thing, we decided we were going to live and raise our family there. So we really have the best of both worlds. We come to New York every month for a week, but we have a great home back in Alabama. "

Recently, Reid moved his corporate headquarters from Dallas, Texas, to downtown Florence, Alabama. Previously, he operated a flagship store in an historical home, Pickett Place, a few blocks from the center of downtown. Along with designer Natalie "Alabama" Chanin and a number of other area artists, Reid has been active in promoting the arts and commerce in the Shoals.

They were better woodsmen and cleverer at hiding themselves than proper human beings, so that they were able to press on another fifteen miles before we could contain them and bring them to battle.
