Back Into The Studio With Tucker On A Nice Spring Day in February
Posted: Feb 08, 2007 Yesterday was good. Here in Greenville, South Carolina, it felt like spring. The weather was simply amazing. It made me feel like a million bucks- and then my buddy Doug Gray called. The day was getting even better.He asked me to come over to the studio and hang out, and ... ah heck, you know how much I love the studio. If you don’t, read last week’s blog.
As always, my visit was great fun. I did learn that the new Marshall Tucker Band album will be called The Next Adventure. The cover design is awesome. At least three of the songs were written by George McCorkle and one of the tunes was written by Toy Caldwell, so there is a real sense of “extended family.” All of the songs I have been exposed to so far are very much old school MTB sounding. I like that.
I watched and listened as Chris Hicks added slide and lead to a few songs. I am convinced that Chris is the next big superstar of Southern rock and soul. This guy is the whole package; the guitar, songwriting; and an absolutely killer voice.
It was great hanging with drummer B.B. Borden, who related a few road tales, like the tour he was on as drummer for Mother’s Finest when they toured with The Who. B.B. dispelled the rumors that Keith Moon was always acting insane. He told me Moonie was really a nice, easygoing guy offstage. Pretty cool stuff. I also got to spend a little bit of time with my old friend Pat Ellwood, the latest Spartanburg homeboy to join the band.
When I got home last night, I chilled out and was watching the show I love to hate, American Idol. One girl who resembled a punked out Carly Simon came out and nailed The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post.” Not an easy song to sing, (From one who truly knows!) And accapella at that. The girl was voted through. It’ll be interesting to see how far she goes in the competition. One sure way to endear ol’ Buffalo is to sing a Brothers tune. I’ll be watching you girlfriend.
