The Unchained Georgia Tour: A Prelude To Opening Night

This afternoon esteemed author and The Moth creator George Dawes Green called me. On Monday, October 11, George will be on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, to kick off the Unchained Tour of Georgia.

The Unchained Tour of Georgia celebrates independent bookstores. They want local people to buy books from independently owned Georgia establishments. George orchestrated a  tour where storytellers travel through 13 cities on an old school bus to spin yarn at Mom & Pop stores. It’s a national story that The London Times, The New Yorker, NPR’s All Things Considered and many other periodicals are all covering. I wanted to compose this dispatch to behoove Georgians to seize this rare opportunity to help local business-owners as well as witness this first-rate storytelling tour. George Dawes Green: That’s right. We’ve got seven storytellers who will tell 4 or 5 stories a night. We’ve also got some great musicians. Tina Ansa is an African American writer from Macon, Georgia. She wrote Baby of the Family, which she is producing as a movie as well as other books to her credit. She’s a brilliant raconteur. Edgar Glover is a new York-based playwright and raconteur whose had some one-man shows. He just talks about growing up in Savannah and his kind of crazy mother. Dan Kennedy wrote Rock On—it’s a comic novel about the rock and roll industry that you’d love. He’s the host of the New York City Moth slams. He’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever heard.

Juliette Hope Wayne is a raconteur from Philadelphia. She’s young and she tells stories about being young and kind of confused. Wanda Bullard is from Saint Simons Island. She’s a schoolteacher in Brunswick. I really started The Moth on Wanda’s porch years ago. She’s a fabulously beloved creature. Chad Faries is a professor of poetry at Savannah State. He rides motorcycles and gets into a lot of trouble. Let me see, did I name seven…we’ll then there’s me.

The musicians are Cary Ann Hurst--sort of a mad Dolly Parton. She’s a beautiful lyricist, and her husband Michael Trent will be playing the first half of the tour. The second half of the tour is Katy Rose Cox. She’s a fiddler from Austin. She played with great bands like the Maybelles, Shotgun Party and she’s just amazing. We’ll bring the bus in about 4 o’clock, and we’ll visit Beachview Books. Folks can look at the bus, and then we’ll do the show Monday night. We’ll sell out, so people need to be warned about that and buy their tickets…
