Alabama Bred Artist Paxton Creates Pelican Belt Buckle To Help Save Gulf Coast

My talented nephew, California artist and Elk River native Paxton (Mobley), has been creating fine art for over twenty years and has become a favorite with collectors. Recently, he began desiging original belt buckles, most of them in animal designs from dragons to dragonflies.

Paxton was reared in north Alabama, but he has a special affection for the state in which he was born--Louisiana. He is also deeply committed to preserving the environment. To demonstrate his commitment to protecting the natural world, Paxton has created a new design for his original belt buckles and pendants--a replica of the Louisiana state bird, the pelican. Half of the net proceeds from the sale of the pelican belt buckles and pendants will be donated toward the reclamation of the Gulf Coast..See more about this buckle on his website. I asked Paxton what inspired him to design the pelican belt buckle. He responded: "I watched a special on the BP oil spill the other night, and it really hit home how bad the disaster is. I wanted to help out some way so I came up with the idea of creating a buckle and donating 50% of the net proceeds to the clean up of Louisiana and surrounding coastal areas. I was actually born in Louisiana, and so I chose the Louisiana state bird, the pelican, for the buckle design. The money will go to the LA Gulf Response which is made up of several well-known organizations." The organizations sponsoring the LA Gulf Response include the Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, and the National Wildlife Federation.

Paxton has already completed his wax model for the *pelican* (see photo above) and is in the process of having the buckles cast. These fabulous buckles will be available in either sterling silver or bronze. Each pelican belt buckle will be stamped, numbered and hand signed.

Paxton says "I will offer jeweled accents on the pelicans as I do on the other buckles. The pelican buckles will be available in both sterling silver and bronze. However, at this point, the pelican pendants will only be cast in sterling silver " The artist also creates the leather straps to accompany these unique buckles. Marne Mobley, Paxton's wife and a seasoned professional jeweler herself, says " I know how much the south means to my husband and I have seen its beauty with my own eyes many time. Thus, it has been very inspiring to watch this piece being created knowing its purpose is to help restore and protect that which gives the south's coastal states their beauty and character."

I can't wait to wear my pelican belt buckle and show my support of the Gulf Coast recovery effort. I have even adopted a new mantra: " Buy a buckle; save a bird." Hats off to Paxton for not just talking the talk but walking the walk.
