More Music, Moviemaking, and the Annual Helen Keller Festival in the Shoals

You know it's summer in Alabama when the annual Helen Keller Festival week is about to commence. This year the 32nd annual festival in Tuscumbia, AL, (one of the four cities in the Shoals) will run from June 21-June 27 and will feature musicians, artists, authors signing their books, a myriad of activities including fun runs and bike rides, and lots of food, and tons of fun. Of course, one of the star attractions is always the performance of The Miracle Worker which is staged at the home of Helen Keller, Ivy Green, and runs for one month every summer. This year the dates for the show, now in its 49th year, are June 4 through July 10. Check out the events at their website: Helen Keller Festival 2010. I was just chatting last week via email with writer, C. S. (Chris) 
Fuqua, who will be signing his book, Music Fell on Alabama: The Muscle Shoals Sound That Shook the World, at Cold Water Books on Thursday, June 24. I met Chris Fuqua in the mid '90s when he came to Athens State to talk about his book, Notes to My Becca. Fuqua has recently published a revised edition of Music Fell on Alabama,  which was first released in 1991. He  is the author of several books including The Swing (Uncial Press, 2008), The Native American Flute: Myth, History, Craft (Awe Struck Books, 2007), Big Daddy's Gadgets (Awe Struck Books, 2006), Music Fell on Alabama (New South, 2006), Butterflies Die: Audio (Books in Motion, 2001), Flight of the Omni (Books in Motion, 1999), Deadlines: Audio (Books in Motion, 1998), Death in Service: Audio (Books in Motion, 1997), Divorced Dads (Fairview Press, 1996), Notes to My Becca (Fairview Press, 1995), Music Fell on Alabama (Crane Hill, 1991) . Natalie Chanin, also known as Alabama Chanin,  is renowned for her unique creations in both decor and clothing. Chanin will be at the Keller Festival at beautiful Spring Park in Tuscumbia on Saturday, June 26, signing her books and demonstrating her inventive techniques. A few years ago, Chanin and other artists combined their talents and skills to produce the first Alabama Adventure Weekend. I had the pleasure of attending the weekend in 2007, which included a gourmet breakfast at designer Billy Reid's flagship boutique in downtown Florence, a book signing by Hank Klibanoff and Charles Moore at the public library, a picnic at Chanin's home/studio, films, music, and a dinner catered by the renowned Alabama Chef Frank Stitt.
 
If you have not yet sampled the delights of Tuscumbia, Alabama, let me urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to experience this often overlooked jewel of the Shoals. Not only is it the birthplace of Helen Keller, but it also boasts a main street that can compete with any mid-sized town. There is Cold Water Books, a one of a kind privately owned bookstore, artist's studios, delightful places to shop and dine, an authentic 1950's soda shop (I can testify regarding the milkshakes), and a park that any city would be proud of it complete with miniature train that traverses the park and an authentic 
merry go round.  Each night of the festival concludes with a magnificent light show at the lake in Spring Park.
 
While you are in the Quad Cities, or the Shoals, take time to see three special ---Fame Studios on Avalon Avenue, the old Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on Jackon Highway, and the former Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on Alabama Street in Sheffield which now houses Cypress Moon Productions, the professional home of internationally known  
filmmaker Tonya Holly. Holly's latest film, still in production, is Bonnie and Clyde.
 
Speaking of Cypress Moon Productions, this Saturday, June 12, the studio will present the first in a series of  film workshops and seminars.
