Rams Draft Franchise Face in Sam Bradford

We’ll begin our NFL Draft recaps with the team who selected first overall—St. Louis. Much like Detroit a year ago, the Rams forged a new path with the selection of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. After passing on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez in the last two drafts, St. Louis had to get a signal caller. “The Greatest Show on Turf” has given way to bad drafts and six wins over the last three seasons. With the selection of the former Heisman winner, the franchise can establish a fresh identity.

Bradford immediately becomes the face of the St Louis organization. Coach Steve Spagnuolo may build up the defense and Steven Jackson will need to run the ball, but the future of the Rams (on the field and marketing-wise) will be decided by the development of the new quarterback. St. Louis executives already like the reaction of the fan base to the former Big 12 signal caller:

“The early returns are encouraging for the Rams, who fielded hundreds of phone calls inquiring about season tickets in the first 48 hours after Bradford was selected No. 1 overall. Friday night, the Rams carted Bradford to a VIP reception for sponsors and suite holders at Grant's Farm. There, Bradford received an enthusiastic greeting as he briefly spoke to a crowd of 350.

It was a sign that the Rams plan to market Bradford to pump up interest and ticket sales. Which is a smart plan. But Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff says Bradford is just one part of a wider marketing strategy that will feature Jackson and several of the team's emerging stars including James Laurinaitis, Jason Smith, Chris Long, Donnie Avery, etc.

"That said, there's genuine excitement in the community over the Bradford pick," Demoff said. "We hope it provides the kind of energy we can build on. As we start a youth movement, this is the piece that helps tie it together."

There’s no guarantee that Bradford will be an NFL success. We all know of the numerous issues teams have had with highly-drafted quarterbacks who never make it. However, the Rams had to make this pick for the team to re-establish some confidence with the great sports fans of St. Louis. With new ownership on the way and a promising solution at quarterback, the Rams can start moving in the right direction and quit drafting in the Top 5.
