New Orleans and the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival 2010

I don't get down to New Orleans nearly so often as I would like although it is a place close to my heart. New Orleans is one of my top three cities in America, along with New York City and San Francisco.

As a matter of fact, I wish I were in New Orleans at this very minute in the midst of the 24th annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival (March 24-28). I have had this fabulous event on my bucket list for, well, about 24 years! This year's festival is already proving to be a stellar event featuring Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Edward Albee, novelist Dave Eggers and Jill Conner Brown and journalist Cokie Roberts---to name only a few. I can't even utter the name Tennessee Williams without wanting  to quote from A Streetcar Named Desire  ("I have never lied in my heart"), The Glass Menagerie ("I am the opposite of a state magician, he gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion"), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I taught the plays of Tennessee Williams for years at Athens State University, so I could go on and on, but I won't. I encourage you to explore this phenomenal playwright for yourself.

I recommend the excellent movies made of his plays by some of the great directors of the 20th century. By the way, no one does Stanley Kowalski like Marlon Brando----and, don't worry. I am not going to scream "STELLA."

If I could be in NOLA this weekend, I would be particularly interested in meeting David Simon, also a guest at the conference and the writer/producer of the up and coming HBO series Treme' as well as The Wire. Several years ago, Wynton Marsalis, along with journalist Lolis Eric Elie, produced a powerful documentary entitled Faubourg Treme'. Simon has captured the ambience of that film and created an original dramatic series set in post Katrina New Orleans. See Swampland for more on the soon-to-be-released series Treme'.

If you were not aware that the Tennessee Williams Festival was taking place, do not despair. There is always next year.

I have even more good news!  I will be traveling to New Orleans in just two weeks!. My friends and I have reservations in The Crescent City for the weekend of April 9. For those of you who love to live vicariously, I am staying at a luxury rental in the Faubourg Marigny area. River House (check out the Garden Room) is owned and operated by Csaba Lukacs and David Lummis. David is furiously working on a novel series called The Coffee House Chronicles, and I look forward to reading and reviewing his work.

As soon as I return, I will be blogging about my trip. Those of you who read my work know you can also expect a taste by taste description of every delectable morsel of food that I put in my mouth, and I plan to have a taste of everything I see.

I am particularly fond of breakfast, and, yes, I will have a cup of cafe au lait and some beignets at the Cafe Du Monde, but I also have my mouth set for fried oysters eggs benedict---which occupies some faint but seductive memory in my dusty brain. I think I had that exquisite dish at the Coffee Pot on St Peter Street many, many years ago.

Of course, we plan to have Jazz Brunch (second breakfast) at one of the old establishments such as Antoine's or Commander's Palace, and I can assure you I will not miss eating at Galatoire's. I would also like to drop in at one of John Besh's restaurants, Restaurant August, near the warehouse district.

I am counting on my dear friend and long-time resident of New Orleans, Dr Brobson Lutz (who just happens to own Tennessee Williams' home) to advise us on all things New Orleans.

I am also eager to hear the suggestions from Swampland readers about their fave places in the Big Easy.
