Sweet Home Alabama: Movie Making and Music in Muscle Shoals

A Pitch Video, like a "Demo Reel" in the music business, about the music of the Muscle Shoals entitled "Sweet Home Alabama--The Music of Muscle Shoals" is currently in the final editing stages. The director and producer of this amazing documentary is Wallace Sears, partner/director/producer of In the Family Productions LLC, out of Birmingham, Alabama. Sears began working on the film in September of 2008 and hopes to release the final version as a ninety minute feature film. The screenplay for the movie was written by Terry Pace, a local music historian and adjunct faculty member at the University of North Alabama, and journalist Robert Palmer. Both have held editorial positions with the Florence Times Daily.

The documentary movie will feature interviews with those who participated in and those who witnessed one of the most phenomenal musical developments in the history of recorded music---the metamorphosis of two tiny studios (FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound) in North Alabama into the center of the recording world between the years of 1961 and 1980. Although the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit song "Sweet Home Alabama" was not itself recorded in Muscle Shoals, it was about the music of the Shoals. As Jimmy Johnson (one of the Swampers) said, "Lynyrd Skynyrd fell in love with Alabama and Alabama fell in love with Lynyrd Skynyrd."

I talked with Wallace Sears over lunch in Athens, Alabama, last week. Sears said that this film is told through interviews, archival film footage, still photos and music clips featuring the creative forces and eccentric talents who recorded some of the most enduring and influential music of all time. Among these recording giants are Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones--to name only a few. Sears is particularly proud that the entire crew involved in the making of "Sweet Home Alabama" is from Alabama including a production team from Cornerstone Entertainment in Athens, Alabama. A full partner in this ambitious enterprise is the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and its executive director David Johnson. The Hall of Fame located on Highway 72 in Tuscumbia, AL. Another film crew is also currently working in the Shoals on a second movie about the best kept secret outside of Europe, the music that was created and/or recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I talked with Dick Cooper on Friday of last week, and he has been working with both production companies providing insights and sharing his collection of photographs from the last forty years. Cooper, who produced Drive-By Trucker's Southern Rock Opera, has just produced a cd featuring Jason Isbell (formely of DBT) and Sons of Roswell. Cooper was also instrumental in getting funding for the Roots of Alabama Music Trail, a self guided WIFI tour beginning in the Shoals. The Alabama Music Trail is part of The Roots of American Music Trail.

The future's so bright that everyone in the Shoals will have to wear shades. This weekend (March 4-7) marks the 13th George Lindsey UNA Film Festival. The theme this year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the movie Back to the Future. Several stars from the 1985 hit film“Back to the Future” will hold an autograph session from 9 to 11 a.m. March 6 at the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, 20 Hightower Place, Florence. Actors James Tolkan and Claudia Wells will be available for the entirety of the session. Writer/producer Bob Gale will hold a separate signing from 4 to 5 p.m. March 5 at the House of Heroes comic store on E. Mobile Street in downtown Florence.
