Big 12 Teams See Recruiting Success

We’re used to seeing Texas and Oklahoma at the top of the Big 12, and nothing was different on last week’s National Signing Day. The “Big 2” have won the last six conference title games, and they were both ranked in the nation’s Top 10 with their respective recruiting classes. Mack Brown and his staff did their usual stellar job of keeping the best talent in-state, and the Longhorns ended up with a Top 3 class. The Sooners brought in a highly-rated group, as Bob Stoops’ crew raided the Lone Star State for the majority of their prospects and also pulled in three players from talent-rich California.

The strength of the conference was seen in three other schools finishing in the Top 25 of the recruiting rankings. Texas A&M had an especially talented class, and Mike Sherman proved to Aggies fans that he and his staff can win important battles on Signing Day. With their tradition and facilities, there is no reason that A&M should not get back to the winning form they showed under R.C. Slocum. Missouri’s Gary Pinkel also brought in a very solid group, and Nebraska did a quality job in building off their North Division title and hauling in a Top 25 class.

Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas Tech finished in the 30-40 range on Signing Day. The 39th ranking for Baylor may not seem that special until you consider that the Bears were not rated in the Top 50 with their past five recruiting classes. If Art Briles can continue to bring in enough top Lone Star prospects, he can create a winner in Waco.

Tommy Tuberville lost some top prospects at Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders class was still decent under the circumstances. How the new coach manages the change from a wide-open Mike Leach attack to a more conservative approach will define if the Tech program can continue their recent success.

Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State and Colorado rounded out the conference recruiting haul. These are the schools that have a more difficult time pulling prospects out of talent-rich Texas, and their rankings suffer accordingly. Lone Star native Turner Gill should have a better class in 2011, with an entire year to recruit in Texas. The biggest concern in the league has to be Colorado, where hot seat coach Dan Hawkins saw the Top 10 in-state players cross the Rocky Mountain borders for greener football pastures.

Overall, the Big 12 came out of Signing Day with solid results. As more teams approach the talent level of the ‘Big 2’, the conference will continue to grow in stature. Texas and Oklahoma are the established league powers, and whoever can do the best recruiting job in the Lone Star State (over 50% of the Big 12's 2010 signees were from the state of Texas) will be the top candidate to join the 'Horns and Sooners in fighting for conference supremacy.
