Alabama Schools Getting It Done in Recruiting

As National Signing Day arrives this Wednesday, fans will hear a ton about Texas and Florida (as well as Georgia) as those states produce so many top Division I players. But another state where recruiting success is being seen in a big way is Alabama. We all know how well Nick Saban has built up the talent base for the Tide on their way to a 26-2 record and a national Title over the last two seasons. Bama will sign another top class this Wednesday, but Gene Chizik and Auburn are on the verge of inking a Top 5 class as well.

The standards are getting so high in Tuscaloosa that the media is writing stories about having to ‘give up’ the national recruiting crown. Saban came to Alabama three years ago and made recruiting his top priority, and stellar results have followed. Besides concentrating on the top prospects in-state, Bama has also targeted the fertile Georgia talent pool by playing their season opener in Atlanta the last two seasons (taking down Clemson and Virginia Tech). That Peach State focus has netted five top recruits in each of the last two recruiting classes.

Gene Chizik came to Auburn last offseason with a number of skeptics, although we here at Swampland were not in that group. The new coach on the Plains also made recruiting his top priority, and the Tigers’ class for this year looks to be among the nation’s best. Chizik has made Auburn competitive in the Heart of Dixie once again, as opposed to the last couple of recruiting season where the Tide seemed to get any prospect they wanted in the state of Alabama.

The ratings could change on Wednesday because there are always some surprise prospects who change their mind at the last minute, but the SEC currently has six of the Top 10 classes in recruiting. Because of the improvement in their talent pool, teams like Auburn will make it difficult on Alabama (and Florida) to continue their run of excellence. The reality for SEC teams is that you need to be recruiting at an elite level just to keep up, because enough of your conference brethren will be pulling in top classes every year.
