Crimson Tide Rules: Alabama Celebrates in Life and Art

It was like the closing of the Red Sea in the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California on January 7 when the Alabama Crimson Tide rolled over the Texas Longhorns to secure the position as the number one college football team in the nation. The Rose Bowl stands were filled with ecstatic Alabama fans cheering the team and particularly  Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. During the Alabama/Texas game, Ingram demonstrated just how much he deserved the honor of receiving the Heisman.

This Auburn Tiger fan found herself yelling Roll Tide and waving a red and white pompom at the television, a totally new experience. Friends who were at the game sent text messages and photos. It was the next best thing to being there. When the team returned to Tuscaloosa, a huge celebration honoring the players and coaches. The victory celebratioin  was held on January 16 at Bryant-Denny Stadium to the delight of thousands of fans.

At half-time of the BCS Champtionship game  the Million Dollar Band took the field and lived up to its name, one acquired in 1922 when the Alabama lost to Georgia Tech and an alumnus countered the criticism by saying, “Yes, but we have a million dollar band.” The name "Million Dollar Band" was bestowed on the organization by Alabama alumnus W. C. "Champ" Pickens after the band raised funds to travel to the 1922 Alabama vs Georgia Tech football game, where Alabama lost 33-7. These days the band is often referred to as the MDB.

On the day the team landed back on Alabama soil, Athens artist Carole Foret painted a 48" by 36" oil on canvas of Mark Ingram entitled  "Passion and Glory.” This week the painting went on the auction block with the bidding starting at $2000. Ten percent of all proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Athens, Alabama. Carole says she painted the portrait to celebrate the "greatness of Mark Ingram as the Crimson Tide of Alabama wins the BCS National Champtionship." The auction ends Monday, January 18th, so get your bid in now if you would like to own an original painting of Ingram by renowned arttist Carole Foret. You can place a bid on her web site.
