Valantinus: Blood Brothers: A Different Kind of Vampire Novel

While she lives in Canada and has no ties to the South, I still wanted to review her novel. It’s so good. And y'all know how much I love horror, fantasym comics and all the good stuff! You can hardly find a listing in The Writer’s Market that doesn’t say “no vampire stories.” There’s a good reason for that. They call it market saturation. Vampires have taken over as the new chic. From the romance novel blood suckers of the Twilight series, to the southern fried Louisiana vampires on HBO’s True Blood and all points in between, it seems you can’t toss a wooden stake without hitting one of these deadly night creatures.
The thing about it is, our entertainment industry are copy cats. Always have been. If someone has a good, successful idea, you can count on seeing, hearing or reading twenty more stories just like that one in short order. My point is, all the vampires are really starting to look alike to us daywalkers.
Enter Canadian author Ziana de Bethune. She really has found a new and interesting way to tell a vampire tale. Valantinus: Blood Brothers (Flat Hat Publishing) is fresh, different and down right horrifying.
It’s a tale of love and betrayal, life and death, all told in graphic detail. It’s enough to make your blood run cold. Did you just lick your lips? You’re one of them, I knew it!
Just kidding.
The Unholy Trinity are pretty creepy, but they are nothing compared to the book’s main character Valantinus “the governor of the damned.” He’s a pretty scary character, but even more so after his own people turn on him.
Valantinus is by no means the typical vampire. He is like some sort of evil comic book villain and alien hybrid who has at present lived a total of 46 lifetimes. He is cold blooded, calculating and one of the most interesting and compelling vampire creations since Blade. (The comic book character that spawned three Wesley Snipes movies.)
Blood Brothers is at once unsettling, creepy, funny, sad and passionate. Just like life. I can hardly wait to read Ziana’s already announced prequel and sequel to this trilogy. She’s already got me licking my fangs.
