I find it almost funny that the very last film I saw in 2009 turns out to be the best movie of the year, and maybe the best movie of the entire decade. James Cameron’s vision began many years ago, but I seriously doubt the movie would have been nearly this powerful in the limited CGI world of even a decade ago. This science fiction epic has it all - great acting, a great story dealing with everything from racism to native American issues, to ecology to anti-war sentiments. Lots of action and cool special effects that add to the story rather than dominate it. By the way, I attended the non-3D version. I am sure the 3D is amazing, but my eyesight does not do well with those new dark lens 3D glasses. Just a wonderful film.

2. Inglorious Basterds
Quentin Tarantino deals out another winning hand with more of his unparalleled storytelling abilities and trademark dialogue scriptimg matched by top flight acting, including one of the best roles ever from Brad Pitt. Nazi hunting made fun.

3. The Blind Side
The true-life story of Leigh Anne Toughy (Sandra Bullock), a wealthy white Memphis woman (wealthy because of her husband’s successful chain of Taco Bells), and Michael Oher, the black teen (Quintin Aaron) she adopts off the streets and nurtures into a star athlete. Country music star Tim McGraw deserves props as Bullock’s husband, and the entire cast is just perfect in this heartwarming film.

4. The Road
The adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, about a father and son (Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee) fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic America is as emotionally powerful as it is visually stunning.

5. Up In The Air
George Clooney as a corporate downsizer in his best lead role yet. A near-perfect film that is funny, and at times very sad. Just like life.

6. Precious
Mo'Nique will no doubt receive an Oscar for her performance as Precious’ mother. Gabourey Sidibe likewise deserves an award. It’s one of those films like The Road that may be hard to watch, but you are reakky glad you saw it.

7. Star Trek
When I first heard they were rebooting one of my all time favorite TV shows, I was skeptical to say the very least. But in the end J.J. Abrams delivered an excellent film, with a terrific ensemble cast, loads of action, and a pretty cool plot. Oh, and Leonard Nimoy!

8. District 9
A truly original science fiction story about aliens stranded on Earth and herded into a ghetto outside Johannesburg, South Africa. Stark parallels to apartheid are obvious, but not overbearing. And the big grasshopper aliens looked real.

9. (500) Days of Summer
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in the best real and honest love story of the year. With a killer soundtrack to boot.

10. Zombieland
An undead-ridden action-comedy about zombie slayers Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg. Lots of gross scenes, but they are so funny it is worth the ride. And Bill Murray’s cameo is priceless.

Honorable mention:

Drag Me to Hell
This one proves that the best horror films don't have to be torture-porn). It’s the good ol’ Shock Theater days of gypsy women, curses and suspense.
