Big 12 Daily Fever: Oklahoma State out in the cold on Indoor Facility

With temperatures below freezing in Stillwater much of last week, Oklahoma State had to brave the elements in their preparation for the Cotton Bowl against Ole Miss. Meanwhile, the Rebels practiced in their indoor facility when the weather was cold or raining. It turns out that OSU is the only program in the Big 12 without an indoor practice facility, as construction of their new $50 million building (which will be the largest in the league when built) has been paused due to the OSU athletic facilities fund taking a $282 million hit during the 2008 stock-market crisis.

Of course, Oklahoma State’s head man was making no excuses about being outside:

"We're going to practice, and we expect our players to perform," Cowboy coach Mike Gundy said. "When we walk off the field today at 3:30, we'll be better than when we went on the field. Unless it's ice or lightning, we're going to go practice.

"Any time you talk about (the lack of an indoor facility), it becomes an issue. But if it's not going to change, we need to go forward. As soon as we can (start construction), we'll get it going."

As far as postseason practice, it may not be the biggest deal in the world to be out in the cold other than a little discomfort. However, the “issue” that Gundy refers to is that the other schools in the league will use the facility advantage in recruiting. Look for Oklahoma State’s football people to push for the start of their proposed facility as soon as financially possible.
