Big 12 Daily Fever: Mack Brown Handsomely Rewarded

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that now certainly applies to coach’s salaries. Much like the theme in our SEC story today, the University of Texas is showing how much a top football coach is worth with Mack Brown receiving a raise to over $5 million annually.

The Longhorns are preparing to win their second National Championship since 2005, and the athletic department responded accordingly in extending Brown. Texas football is a cash cow, and the administration knows the value to the school of having one of the top football programs in the country.

Brown has built a consistent power in Austin, where the expectations are extremely high. The veteran coach definitely has the confidence of his athletic director DeLoss Dodds:

 “Mack is the best college football coach in America , and this action recognizes him for that,” Dodds said.

The only question for the Texas coaching staff, with Brown’s contract running through 2016, is the future of defensive coordinator and “coach-in-waiting” Will Muschamp. His name may come up for some head coaching positions soon, but all of that will have to wait until after the Longhorns meet Alabama in the BCS Title Game.
