Tomorrow is the 63rd birthday of Duane Allman. I can think of no better tribute than the following piece, written by GRITZ reader and Facebook friend Brian Ringo. He really summed up my own feelings on Skydog as well. Thanks Brian.

This is my tribute to Howard Duane Allman, the person who in 2003, Rolling Stone magazine called the 2nd best guitar player of all time, behind Jimi Hendrix.

Duane was born November 20, 1946 in Nashville Tn. and passed away October 29, 1971 in Macon, Ga. So how much of an impact on the world did he leave, especially the music world and the lives of those who knew him and were around him, consider-

On March 5th, 1998 the Georgia Senate passed a resolution naming part of State Highway 19 in Macon from the intersection of Holt Avenue to College Boulevard as " Duane Allman Blvd. " 27 years after he died, the whole state still recognized him as one of their best citizens, someone held in such high regard that they named a permanent monument to him.

Fans carved " Remember Duane Allman " into the clay alongside of I-20 near Vicksburg, Ms. The carving lasted for 10 years. There was a photograph of the carving in the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll.

After the wreck, Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated the song " Free Bird " to the memory of Duane. Many people assumed that Allen Collins wrote the song about Duane, but that is incorrect. The song was written before he passed away, it was actually written after Collins's girlfriend asked him " If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me ".

That wreck at the intersection of Hillcrest and Bartlett in Macon took away the premiere slide guitarist the world has ever known and an incredible human being. In his day Duane was a Fender man. He played a Telecaster modified with a Stratocaster neck and a Vox Super-Beatle amplifier with 6 -10" speakers and 2 horns. He played other guitars at different times and had such a knowledge of the instruments that he used a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, which used old 9v batteries, because they made what he called " a special sound, " He also used a standard 1954 Stratocaster during his early years at Muscle Shoals. That guitar is now at the Hard Rock cafe in London at The Vault.

Duane used Gibson guitars in later years. In 2001 there was discovered a 1959 Les Paul standard gold top that he probably bought in Gainesville, that he traded in 1969, minus the pickups. It was traced back to Duane by the serial number and is considered the guitar he probably used to record " Layla. "

And as a side note, Duane learned to play the slide guitar using a Coricidin bottle that Gregg had given him when he had a cold. Gregg came back a while later to check on his big brother and found that Duane had taken the medicine out of the bottle and was using it to play slide guitar to a Taj Mahal record. This was 1968, the first song Duane learned, " Statesboro Blues ".

Duane and Gregg's dad was a military man. Willis Allman was a career Army sergeant who was murdered in a robbery by an Army veteran he had befriended near Norfolk, Va. After the murder, Geraldine "Mama A" moved the family to Nashville and eventually to Daytona Beach, Fla. It was in Daytona Beach that Gregg introduced Duane to the guitar. Gregg said that they had heard a neighbor playing some country standards on his guitar , Gregg went and used his savings and bought one, and Duane quickly picked it up and was a natural. Gregg said Duane passed him up on guitar skills "like he was standing still". Consider that at the time, Duane was not in school and used to sit on the porch and play all day long, while Gregg was in school.

In 1959 the boys went back to Nashville and were visiting some relatives when they went to a concert and heard B.B.King. Duane turned to Gregg and said " we got to get into this".

The first band the brothers had was The Escorts, quickly followed by The Allman Joys. After Gregg graduated they hit the road and eventually moved on to Nashville and St.Louis. It was there that the Allman Joys became Hour Glass, another less than successful road warrior band. They wanted to play the blues, their record company wanted just another standard pop band. If you listen to the Liberty Records releases and the Hour Glass recordings in the Dreams collection, you will hear two distinctly different recordings. The recordings made later had the sound that would become the biggest change in the music world in the early 70s. From this point Hourglass broke up and Duane and Gregg went back to Florida and played with the 31st of February on some demo sessions, the drummer for that band, Butch Trucks.

When Gregg went back to California to complete some contractural obligations, Duane was soon in the studios in Muscle Shoals playing with the likes of Clarence Carter, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie, Herbie Mann and many others. At one point Duane traveled to New York to work with Aretha Franklin, where he went to see Johnny Winter in concert at the Fillmore East. He commented to fellow Muscle Shoals guitarist Jimmy Johnson that in a year, he would be on that stage. While in Muscle Shoals, Duane perfected his craft at a small isolated cabin and in the studio, he laid down some of the best tracks of his young life including on Boz Scagg's " Loan Me A Dime ".

It was in this period that Duane met with Jai Johnny "Jaimoe " Johanson, Chicago bassist Berry Oakley and his old friend Butch Trucks. Berry was committed to a band with another Florida guitar player, Dickey Betts. The other player was keyboardist Reese Wynans, who was later the organist for Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble. When Gregg had finished his commitments on the west coast, Big Brother called and summoned him to Macon, Ga where they had moved to be near Phil Walden and Capricorn Studios, and, what Rolling Stone magazines George Kimball called "The Best Damn Band In The Land" was born. And as the cliche goes, the rest is history. History indeed. By 1970 the Allman Brothers had formed a mutual admiration society with the Grateful Dead. When they played the Fillmore together that year, at the end of the first show both bands were on stage jamming together. The jam band philosophy was perfected during those nights, and many others.

Gregg has said about their jam band philosophy that " All the arrangements are pre-rehearsed down to the letter, but with solo's you can take as long as you want. When it comes to solos each soloist goes around twice, never just once. It takes twice to get out what you really want to say."

Duane was at the same time a very pleasant and loving person, while also someone who liked to stir things up. He was a care free hippie, but was also focused and determined to not waste time, hence the title of the song Gregg wrote later as his tribute to his brother " I Ain't Wastin Time No More ".

Duane was married briefly to Donna Roose and he had a daughter named Galadrielle in honor of Lord Of The Rings. Duane never graduated high school, but he was a voracious reader. He laughingly called himself a " Roads Scholar " due to his reading habits and time spent on the road.

SkyDog was his nickname. Named after the way he could take his guitar playing sky high and the fact that he looked like a shaggy dog with his sideburns.

No quote better summarizes the contrast that was Duane Allman than this, " I'm hitting a lick for peace and every time I am in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace".

Then the real deep contrast in personality comes along, he continues, " But you can't help revolution, because there's just evolution. I understand the need for a lot of changes in this country, but I believe that as soon as everybody can see just a little better, and get just a little hipper to what's going on, they're going to change it. Everybody will - not just the young people, everybody's gonna say, Man this stinks, I cannot tolerate the smell of this thing anymore. Let's eliminate it and get straight with ourselves. I believe if everybody does it for themselves, it'll take care of itself".

With understanding about society and life like that, you can understand how he is still loved and revered by so many today. He touched the lives of those he played music with, and for. He touched the lives of those who were with him, and those he met just once.

Duane rarely talked about anything except music during interviews, except one time about two months before his death he stated " Drugs is one thing that will break up a band, and it will do it quick". Total truth, the others would find out soon enough the wisdom in that statement. Due to the things Duane Allman helped build, the end of the Allman Brothers Band has been predicted, but never realized.

I will close this out with a statement made by Duane just before his death.

" This year I will be more thoughtful of my fellow man, exert more effort in each of my endeavors professionally as well as personally, take love wherever I find it, and offer it to everyone who will take it. In this coming year I will seek knowledge from those wiser than me and try to teach those who wish to learn from me. I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can".

Duane is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon alongside his friend and " brother of the road " Berry Oakley. Gone, but never forgotten.
