Interview of the Week: The Great Jerry Reed
Posted: Nov 16, 2009Over the weekend I was listening to this great Dixie Tabernacle release again and really digging their cover of "Amos Moses." That prompted me to go back and relive my interview with the man who wrote the song, the one and only Jerry Reed.
When I spoke with the late guitar hero in 2005, I had a great time. See, I have been a Reed fan since childhood. I remember buying his records, listening to him on radio and seeing him perform on TV and in the movies. When we lost Jerry on September 1, 2008 I was deeply saddened.
I was a projectionist at the Camelot Drive In in Spartanburg during the summer of 1977. That summer we ran only two films. Star Wars ran for several weeks, followed by Smokey and The Bandit. Man I loved that one. Jerry shared some great Bandit stories during our conversation four years ago.
(Speaking of his dog in the film, Fred.) Oh yeah, I wish I could have been more like Fred. They put those hot lights on the hood of the tractor trailer and they would put Fred up there with his front paws on the dash and then he would turn around and put his butt up there. (laughs)

I was abig fan of his also. I saw him in Sherveport in the early 70s and in the era of Clapton and Puple haze. He still rocked and I enjoyed the show. He had a great bass player also.
