Big 12 Daily Fever: Does It Matter Which North Team Plays Texas In The Title Game?

A Nebraska writer has penned an interesting column that suggests the Cornhuskers would be the better opponent for Texas in order to have a competitive Big 12 Title game. We can surmise that fans in Manhattan, Kansas disagree strongly, but the pro-Nebraska piece makes one key point:

“Five straight championship game clunkers on prime-time TV — with the South winning them all 62-21, 38-17, 21-7, 70-3 and 42-3 — have put this league in desperate desire of a competitive matchup.”

It has been a theme we have written about all season: the current perception of the league is the "Big 2" and everyone else. With Oklahoma's injury-riddled year, the 2009 campaign looks like the mighty Longhorns on top of the Big 12 mountain with no one else in sight.

Maybe Nebraska, with their stellar defense, would give Texas a more competitive game. With Kansas, Kansas St, and Colorado ahead of them, Nebraska only has to win out to claim the North anyway and prove the columnist's point.  However, there's still no way to know that Nebraska can give Texas the best game.  Plus, we've seen Bill Snyder's club pull a major upset in the Title game before.

One thing is clear: the imbalance of the North and South Divisions cannot be fixed with one close Championship Game matchup.
