SEC Daily Fever: Saban and Nutt Share Mutual Admiration

While the Florida-LSU matchup is getting much of the conference attention this week, another key league game will take place when Ole Miss hosts Alabama.

The Rebels came into the season with SEC West title aspirations but were knocked down a few notches by their ugly loss to South Carolina two weeks ago. They could make up for that defeat in a big way with an upset over the Tide, a team many believe is the best in the SEC and the nation.

In a league full of bitter rivals, the two coaches in this game happen to be great friends and have the utmost respect for each other. In fact, Houston Nutt was Nick Saban’s suggested replacement at LSU when he left for the NFL after the ’04 season. Saban believed that Nutt’s Arkansas clubs were the best-prepared teams he faced at LSU, and there is no doubt that Alabama will be ready for a tough contest in Oxford.

At the start of the season, this was a game that was circled on the calendar amongst SEC West followers.  Many believed that Ole Miss and Alabama would be battling for that division's crown with LSU as an outside favorite.  Now, Ole Miss feels like an afterthought.

Nutt has a chance to reenergize SEC title talk this Saturday if his Rebels can beat an Alabama club that has been steamrolling their opponents.
