Born near Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1917, John Lee Hooker ranked as one of America's last great bluesmen. In 1948, he experienced his first number one hit, "Boogie Chillun." Other songs such as "I'm In the Mood," "Crawling King Snake", and "Boom Boom" also were big hits for Hooker. Hooker passed away in 2001 at the age of 83.
In his later years, Hooker enjoyed success from a new generation of fans exposed to his music through English rock musicians. He recorded more than 100 original sessions over the course of his career. Last year, Shout! Factory released the box-set Hooker, the Specialty Label issued John Lee Hooker, and Hip-O Records remastered The Definitive Collection.
Four new Hooker CDs flood the market this year including: Down Child (Primo), Anywhere, Anytime, Anyplace (United Artists), Down At The Landing (Onyx Classix) and Guitar Lovin' Man (JCI). - James Calemine
