SPF Daily Rating: Del Rio Playing Silly Games in Jacksonville

In what should be a small story, Jags coach Jack Del Rio has brought back WR Nate Hughes to the practice squad after cutting him on Monday.

When he cut Hughes, Del Rio announced that it was a "tough business" implying that Hughes was a casualty of his the two key dropped passes in Sunday's blowout (and blacked out) home loss to Arizona.

The reason this isn't a small story is that it has become par for the course for Del Rio. He seems to lead his team through slogans and other media driven ideas that somehow show him to be tough.

A perfect example of this was Del Rio's first year as the Jags coach when he placed a huge tree stump and an axe in the locker room alongside the slogan of "keep chopping wood." Each Jag player was encouraged to take chunks out of the stump with the axe as a way of showing the team's progress.

Then, Jags punter, Chris Hanson, followed along with this silly ploy and ended up gashing open his leg leading to emergency surgery. The Jags finished 5-11 that year.

They are 0-2 this year and aren't looking good at all.

It's really too bad that owner Wayne Weaver couldn't see these issues with Del Rio back when he gave him a huge extension a couple of seasons back. Although it might be a harsh assessment, it seems as though Del Rio bears a large amount of blame for killing pro football in Jacksonville.

Other than the owner, Del Rio is the only constant since now Super Bowl winning coach Tom Coughlin was pushed out. Del Rio has fought with players almost every year.

Seemingly every year he cleans out the locker room of players that stand up to him. This past season, Mike Peterson was suspended and later cut after openly questioning Del Rio. RB Fred Taylor, a Peterson defender, was also cut. In the ESPN piece, written at the time, it is pretty clear that Del Rio and his veteran leaders didn't see eye to eye.

The cutting and re-signing of Nate Hughes is just the latest in a string of silly and stupid Del Rio-inspired incidents. Is it any wonder that the Jags have struggled to find consistency?

Del Rio loves the show. Unfortunately, the NFL is about substance.
