The short answer is "Sure, if they want to." But that makes a poor discussion. There are a lot of facets to this topic, some of which have already been touched on, but I'd like to expand on a couple. No 1. There is an enormous difference between playing music and working in the music business. Arguably nothing is more vexing to the creative spirit of the musical artist than the processes involved in making it profitable. Enter the Music Business Executive. There are a multitude of descriptive terms that are often applied to these individuals (liars, thieves, parasites, idiots, control freaks, bunglers, executive producers and dozens I cannot publish here), and on rare and heated occasions even to their faces. Not many are very flattering. Everyone who has ever signed a record deal has their own story. A good old fashioned shotgun wedding is a much more open, and honest affair. But without the guys and gals in the music business, it's a safe bet hundreds of millions of people would have never heard thousands of bands, and certainly never heard their records or tuned them in on the radio. And for better or worse, a lot of musicians learned a lot of lessons from the suits. IN THE BEGINNING For the most part, and here I'm talking about the days when we were still in our teens or early twenties, bands just sort of happened. A couple of guys started talking and found out they both played music, decided to get together and jam, called a couple of other guys, because you gotta have a drummer and a bass player if you wanna rock and roll, and started learning some songs off the radio. Some of those guys started trying to write their own songs. It was all for the absolute love of playing, the sheer joy of jamming with your friends, the thrill of discovering what you could all sound like together. And for some of us, it was so intense we knew we had found something we wanted to do for the rest of our lives. Nobody knew what intellectual property was, or who owned it. Copyrights were confusing and publishing was a complete mystery. Nobody knew what a business plan was, or how to create one, and truthfully at that stage nobody needed one. If you played a gig and got paid anything at all, you split the money. I remember playing gigs where by the time we covered the gas and oil for the van, and paid the sound guy (imperative if you had somebody who could actually run a board), you were lucky if you could eat on the way home. But that was last week, so let's move forward. Seriously, it was all pretty low pressure, and more fun than anything else. The time spent on stage is still like that for almost every player I know. No matter how much some might bitch about this or that, very few musicians ever really want to quit playing, and most could care less what band name is on the marquis, as long as the music is cooking. INEVITABILITY OCCURS Back to the issue of what happens after the Music Biz guys come into the picture with contracts, recordings are made and sold, and lots of touring have all successfully created an identifiable "brand", and then unforeseen circumstances change everyone's reality. Sometimes it's simply a matter of one or more members making a decision to leave the band. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Maybe it's creative differences, maybe it's a power struggle, maybe it's an injury, or a thousand other reasons, but suddenly the band has changed, and regrettably, some will have regrets. But the show must go on, and if we are talking about a highly successful band, it doesn't take long. Sometimes, it is more tragic, and regardless of the exact nature of the incident, it is always much harder when someone who is beloved has died. There is much more grief to try to deal with, but to quote Bernie Leadon, an original member of The Eagles, in his song "My Man", a tribute to Gram Parsons, "we who must remain go on living just the same." I grieved when Bernie left the Eagles, but I never blamed Joe Walsh. Memories are funny things. They are unique and personal, and we all have them. I loved Duane, and was in a funk for a long time after he departed, but who among us would have wanted to miss out on the fabulous guitarist who have "played his part" over the years, like Dangerous Dan Toler, Warren Haynes, Jack Pearson, Derek Trucks, or the piano player who originally signed on to fill the void, Chuck Leavell. And props to Brother Jimmy Herring, who actually came in to replace Dickey when he left the group. The one thing that might be my biggest regret is that Duane never got to stand on stage and play with all those who came behind him, and helped to keep the music alive. I'm certain he would have dug the hell out of it. I can say the same regarding Berry Oakley and Lamar Williams, Allen Woody, and Oteil Burbridge. I could say the same about dozens of old friends who have crossed over. Toy Caldwell was one of my best friends even before the Marshall Tucker Band, and he will always be one of my favorite guitar players of all time, as will Duane Allman. I miss them both to this day, a lot. I would probably never have become as close with George McCorkle as I did save for Toy's passing in 1993, and then we lost George in 2007. Buffalo and I talk a lot, mostly late at night, and we have both attended way too many funerals, played to many benefits for fallen brothers, and the odds are we will have to attend and play some more, regardless of how much we hate the funerals or the reasons for the benefits. Fans often times get kind of possessive of their heroes. They memorize the words on the albums, and know where every lick comes in on that special recording. Change is not always well received, as unavoidable as it is. Everyone has their memories, and we all have our favorites, for our own reasons, and thats okay. It's not always a matter of one player being better than another. The best most of us can ever do is interpret the groove at the moment, and most of us never play the exact same thing twice anyway. Music grows and breathes and songs take on a life of their own, sometimes many different lives. It's all about interpretation. It's okay. It's supposed to be that way Personally I just want to thank the ones who have suffered the incredible loss of their friends, and band mates, and had the gumption to keep on going, no matter how dark the road might seem each time one of those bright lights went out. Thanks for staying true to your calling. And I want to thank the guys who followed, and picked up the Standard, and carried on. Thanks for helping to keep the music, and the memories alive. If you earned the right to take the stage under the name of the band you played with, whether you were a founding member or hired on later, more power to you as long as you give it your all. Long live each and every generation and incarnation of Southern Rock, and teach it to your children. The show must go on.

As long as a musician has a tune in him he needs to let it out. But it kinda reminds me of when when I was six. My Grandaddy took an old axe he had to the hardware store. One day he broke the handle out of it. We went to buy a new handle and he told me the axe had been in the family for well over 100 years. His Grandaddy bought it new and only had to replace the handle in it once. It was handed down to his Daddy and he had to replace the head before handing it down to him. Now he was having to replace the handle again. When did the axe become a totally different axe? Molly Hatchet, for instance, toured for several years with no founding members in the band. Other than the name, were they still Molly Hatchet? Could they have been classified as a "Hatchet Tribute Band"? I'm not taking anything away from the musicians in that version of Hatchet, they are good. Phil sounds a lot like DJB. But how could they really be Hatchet? In some message boards, I've heard the reincarnated Skynyrd refered to as "The Gary Rossington Revue". Now Doug and the boys are still turning out some great tunes as "Tucker" and I saw Blackfoot shortly after Jax passed and they ROCKED!!!! I saw the Brothers on the first tour they did with Derek, which was also the last with Dickey, and they ROCKED. "Krantz99"..... ZZ Top.... almost 40 years .... same 3 dudes.... If the spirit and intent are there, I believe they should continue. For the most part, Skynyrd has not evolved due to creative differences but because members of the band passing on. Gary has earned this (even Ed King said so). It may not be the same but it still is fun and much better than the alternative which is for them to go away. Rock on Gary!!

i posted this over on facebook, and i'll post it here as well, just to keep my perspective consistent: bands evolve over time, just like anything else. unfortunately, when you achieve the highest degree of success, people think that whatever state you're in at that point is "THE band" or "THE team" or whatever. and, on some level, i guess there's a degree of logic in that, because if that's the point that you reached the largest audience, then it could be argued that this was your best lineup, etc. i use the sports team analogy quite a bit. to say that the current lineup of MTB "isn't MTB" is like saying that the Yankees aren't the Yankees if it's not Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, et cetera. is it the same team? of course not. but it's still the Yankees. i'm lucky enough to know a lot of these folks personally, and let me tell you - life on the road is harder now for these guys than it's ever been. a lot of them fly out to dates, use rented gear, and suffer shitty mixes and crappy conditions to be able to continue to play for people. but resting on their laurels isn't an option. they play because, like me, they don't know how NOT to go out and play. and...again, to use MTB as an example - anyone who goes to hear the current lineup and hears Rick Willis play and then turns around and says they're not as good as the original group...well, they're just fooling themselves.

This has always caused lots of passionate debate particularly in the Skynyrd camps. It does strike me as quite odd with them considering the band never even made 2 studio albums in a row with the same lineup before the crash. So now Michael has been drumming in the band for 12 years. How long was Artimus stint? Nowhere near that long. Johnny has been singing 22 years and we still have this discussion? Ricky has been playing under the Skynyrd name for 13 years now and Ed King and Steve Gaines combined played for how many? Jeez, Carol Chase stint in the band lasts longer than Ed, Steve, Bob, Arti, Randall and Mike Estes combined. So guess what, no matter what internet goofballs want to say the public has already spoken on the matter. MTB might be a little more complicated since Doug is little more than the emcee of his own band now. Yet the public goes enough to keep the name alive. Yes, these have become brand names. So next time someone wants to beat up on U2 please remember, they are one of the only bands out there ever to play all their shows with the same guys that met and put a band together. Say what you will about Bono's ego but how many solo albums have Bono and the Edge put out? Other than them not too many band have a leg to stand on in this debate.

I think if the band has been decimated by attrition, then that name should live on as long as it's decided it do so y any remaining members. If a band breaks up, that's a different story. The name should be retired unless agreed upon by all members present and former. In the case of Skynyrd, it's a legendary band that has suffered loss throughout it's existence. I see no more reason to retire the name now than after the plane crash. Their new song writing days might be behind them, but new generations are coming to appreciate them more through their classics then anything. If ya still can rock, keep on rockin'.
