SPF Daily Rating: Jacksonville Mayor Makes Personal Plea For Fans To Buy Jags Tix

The Jaguars lost an astonishing 17,000 season ticket holders between this season and last.  Expectations are that most of their games will be blacked out locally.

So who have the Jags turned to?  

The mayor of Jacksonville, John Peyton, has become a pitch man for Jaguars tickets.  Mr. Peyton explains:

We've got a long way to go on ticket sales, but I'm encouraged that we can make the difference and really let the community know the deals that are available.  You can get into the stadium for $40 a ticket, and with a group it can be even cheaper. But I think we need to do a better job of informing our fans [that this] is an affordable way to enjoy your Sunday.

When your mayor is forced to do the job that your marketing and sales staff should be doing it has officially become embarrassing.

Teams have had to engage public officials to campaign for new or upgraded stadiums, but we can't remember teams using public officials to ask the public to care about their local pro sports team.  In Peyton's defense, his reasoning is sound when he says, "the viability of this team in our city is critically important."  For Jacksonville, it certainly is.

It is sad that the Jaguars have fallen this far.  We will follow this all year.
