In celebration of the release of Pat Conroy’s South Of Broad, his publisher, Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, has created a Pat Conroy contest in conjunction with Swampland.com and its Writers of the South Facebook group.

PRIZES: 15 First Edition Copies of Pat Conroy’s South of Broad

GOALS: With the help of Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, Swampland.com hopes to create a month long online conversation about noted southern author, Pat Conroy. The themes in his writing are universal, but also uniquely southern.

This contest celebrates both the writer and the reader. Here is a contest where anyone who contributes something meaningful to the process can win.

CONTEST DURATION: Four weeks (September 9 , 2009– October 7, 2009)

RULES: Each Wednesday starting on September 9, 2009, Swampland.com will post a essay topic relating to Pat Conroy on its Discourse page. This link will also be posted on the links section of the Writers of the South Facebook group. The topics will cover these basic themes within Conroy’s writing:

Week One – FATE

Essay Topic:

Chapter one of South of Broad begins with the statement, "Nothing happens by accident." Pick a character from one of Pat Conroy’s novels and explain how destiny affects him/her. Do you agree that real life is the result of predetermined forces? Or can we affect our fate?

Week Two – FAMILY

Essay Topic:

We want contest essays to expand beyond merely using the works of Pat Conroy in order to explore thoroughly the role of family in all of southern writing. Feel free use the work(s) of the southern writers at large and their fictional or non-fictional characters to explore the theme of family. Share with us your southern literary experiences that might have moved you personally or best captured the essence of family. Again, you need not illustrate your essay from the novels of Pat Conroy. Writers of the South Facebook Group and Swampland celebrate all of southern writing.

Week Three – RELATIONSHIPS

Post 100 words about what you have discovered about relationships (especially friendship) from southern literature. You may include blood as well as non-blood relationships in the literature of the south. Post your entry on the wall of the Writers of the South Facebook page. You may illustrate your point(s) from any work or works of southern literature. You need not restrict your references to the writings of Pat Conroy. When you compose your entry, it would be helpful if you began with the words Pat Conroy Contest Week 3 or Week 2 etc so we can be certain which topic you are discussing.

Week Four - PLACE

Please post approximately 100 words about the significance of place-- land, geography, locale, and the people who are shaped by it-- in the literature of the south on the Writers of the South Facebook wall. You need not confine yourself to the work of Pat Conroy. Talk about your favorite Southern novel and why you consider it to be "southern." What does place have to do with being southern?

ESSAY WINNERS: (8 winners) Contest entrants must write a 100 word essay about the topic and post it on the Writers of the South wall.

Entrants can enter more than once, but only once per topic.

After October 7, 2009, 8 individual essayists will receive a first edition copy of South of Broad directly from Nan A. Talese/Doubleday. The winners are to be selected by the Swampland.com team, Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, and the response from Writers of the South group members.

The winning essays will be posted on Swampland.com

PARTICIPATION WINNERS: (7 winners) The remaining 7 first edition copies of South of Broad will be reserved for those who contribute to the discussion.

We expect that Writers of the South group members will assist in identifying the winning essays through their reaction to the essays after they have been posted on the Writers of the South wall. We will also count discussion created on Swampland.com because Facebook members can use their Facebook login to comment on Swampland.com as well.

After October 7, 2009, our top 7 participants will receive a first edition copy of South of Broad directly from Nan A. Talese/Doubleday. The winners are to be selected by the Swampland.com team and Nan A. Talese/Doubleday.
