Big 12 Daily Fever: Does Taylor Potts Represent a New Era of Texas Tech QBs?

The same question always hangs over the Texas Tech program- is it the quarterback or the system?

Obviously Mike Leach has had an amazing statistical run with his quarterbacks over the years, although most of those signal callers have not been considered “NFL types”. The program hit its zenith a year ago with Graham Harrell tossing the pigskin, but even he went undrafted and now plays in Canada.

Looking forward to 2009, Leach may have finally found a quarterback who can run his offense and possibly go to the next level. Taylor Potts, a much heralded recruit who has an NFL arm and size, looks like he is developing into the next Red Raider record-setter.

Potts’ performance will hold the key to Tech staying in the top half of the South Division, or slipping back down the conference food chain. If he succeeds, more big-time Texas recruits will look to Lubbock as a place to prepare for the NFL.

Despite the often difficult relationship between Leach and the Texas Tech administration, the relationship between coach and program now seems solid for the long term.  The biggest question in Lubbock is whether this will lead to a long term winning tradition.

Gaining a reputation as a program that develops top QBs for the NFL will certainly help in that effort.
