Big 12 Daily Fever: Fans Are Lining Up In Stillwater

As a highly-anticipated season approaches for Oklahoma State, we know about the preseason Top 10 rating, the renovations to Boone Pickens Stadium, and the high-octane offense that includes All-American weapon Dez Bryant.

Cowboys fans know as well, and they are setting ticket-buying records in Stillwater at an economic time when many schools are seeing revenue go stagnant.

The 2009 season, starting with the opener against Georgia, will be a huge opportunity for Mike Gundy and staff to sell Oky State and its facilities to big-time recruits. With enough top prospects, the Cowboys can begin to change the perception of the Big 12 South as only Sooner and Longhorn territory.

The only issue this raises is the long term imbalance of Big 12 football.  While the Big 12 North struggles to create even one annual top 15 program (although Nebraska and Mizzou are trying), the Big 12 South has two in Texas and Oklahoma.  

Meanwhile, Texas Tech has become a solid 8 to 9 win program, and Oklahoma State seems to be at that level as well.  Texas A&M has the financial resources to be a top level school, and even Baylor is making strides. 

After last year's Big 12 championship controversy between Texas and Oklahoma, more Big 12 South depth may not be what the conference needs.  It leave us asking - will the Big 12 North ever carry its weight in football?
