John, Eddie, Clay and My Road Trip to Macon
Posted: Jan 11, 2007 Hi guys. Well, it’s late Thursday night and I have had a simply great day. What can I say? Some days are just diamonds.It all began innocently enough with a phone call from blues legend John Hammond and the subsequent interview. My God, this man has been there, done that and probably has a closet full of the “t-shirts.”
John was a sheer pleasure to interview. We had a great conversation about all of his years playing and singing. We spoke about his father, the legendary John Hammond, the record company mogul. I was just thrilled to talk about his work with Duane Allman, Eddie Hinton and Delaney Bramlett … what a career. Wow!
The interview will be posted in a few days, between my Macon and Nashville excursions. I hope you all enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed conducting it.
Speaking of interviews, we will soon be interviewing the ultra-talented Eddie Montgomery of Mongomery Gentry fame. These guys carry the torch of Southern Rock with pride, blending it with some of the most amazing country music made today. The new album is winging its way to the Gritz mailbox as we speak. I can hardly wait to hear it. I have met these guys many times down in Florida at Charlie Daniels’ annual Angelus benefits and they are just as good as human beings as they are onstage. Last January, I was able to jam on a couple of songs with them during one of their late-night throw downs, playing “Can’t You See” with members of their band and members of The Marshall Tucker Band. Those are the moments that I live for.

We are also interviewing another great country star by the name of Clay Walker. Clay is an awesome musician and performer with a string of number one hits under his belt. Clay’s new album on Curb Records, including his single “Fore She Was Mama,” will be released March 13th. Our interview will be coming soon.
I leave out in the morning for the Southern Rock capital of the world, Macon, Georgia, where me and my band will play on Saturday at 550 Blues after the Allman Brothers Big House Foundation dinner and concert. Randall Bramblett is playing, as is our good friend Chris Hicks of Marshall Tucker. Man, it is going to be awesome. Rumor has it there are going to be some heavyweight players sitting in. I’m going a day early to visit with friends and see the recently unveiled Otis Redding memorial. I plan on lunching at Mama Louise’s H&H Restaurant and paying another visit to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
All of this and Nashville next week. Life is good. Stay tuned.
