Buffalo's Top Ten List For The Week of July 22, 2009

Posted: Jul 21, 2009

Here’s a new feature for GRITZ, Buffalo’s Top Ten list. Every week I will run down the ten albums, books, movies, TV shows -whatever- that have me excited. My hope is that by sharing these obsessions with you, maybe you'll find something new that you like that maybe you didn’t know about before.

1. TRUE BLOOD  (TV)
One of the most well written shows on TV, this vampire tale that takes place in rural Louisiana has great stories, great Southern accents and dialog, and complex characters, not the least of which is Sookie, aka: Rogue from the X-Men movies, Anna Paquin. The show is also a brilliant statement on social intolerance.

2. IT SHINED SUPE GRANDA (Book)
Ozark Mt. Daredevil’s bassist Supe Granda turns in a 500 page bio on his band, and it is one of the finest, most well written Southern Rock books to date. I am almost finished reading. Look for a glowing review in GRITZ soon.

3. 124 ROSE AVENUE  HANK WILLIAMS, JR.  (CD)
Like I said in my review, this is an outstanding release from Bocephus, and one of his best in years.

4. THE ROAD   CORMAC McCARTHY  (Book)
This post-apocalyptic tale of one man and his son is a real page turner. (Movie adaptation coming soon, but read the book!)

5. STILL UNBROKEN  LYNYRD SKYNYRD  (CD Single)
The boys are back and sounding fine. I am eager to see if the whole album rocks this hard.

6. PINK WARRIOR   CANDY COBURN  (CD Single)
One fine country-pop tune from one of our favorite country rockers, Candy Coburn. All of that plus it’s a fund raiser for breast cancer research.

7. MODBILLY   THE BOXMASTERS  (CD)
I am still blown away by these guys and their unique blend of sixties pop and hillbilly country. So good.

8. BRAGG JAM  (Event)
This weekend in Macon, GA. The annual benefit series returns. One of the highlights finds Chris Hicks (Marshall Tucker/The Outlaws) reuniting with his old band Loose Change.

9. LIVE NOTES FROM ATHENS  TOMMY TALTON BAND  (CD)
A staple of my current playlist on the iPod, the former Cowboy guitarist sounds better than ever on his new CD.

10. IRON MAN 2 PREVIEW (Movie)
I can hardly wait to see Mickey (The Wrestler) Rourke as Whiplash and Scarlett Johansen going dark as Black Widow.

Great list. Hank Jr CD is great. The last few were sad. I was giving up hope. I can't wait for the new Skynyrd CD. I hear all this they are not the orginal band. That right they are not, but with that in mind and take them on their own merits they rock. I saw them during the life at Steel Town tour. They blew the roof off the place. If you don't think they can rock close your eyes and forget the name and listen. The Road is a great book. Good job Buff
