Echoes of the Ebo Tribe

As I promised yesterday, here’s an old ghost story and historical occurrence that still lingers here on St. Simons Island, Georgia. When slaves were brought to the island from Nigeria, they defied landowners by committing suicide. The slaves began chanting, “The sea brought me and the sea will bring me home,” and as they were all chained together—they drowned themselves in Dunbar Creek.

It’s believed the Ebo Tribe still haunt Dunbar Landing and on certain nights you can hear slave chains rattling and a sorrowful chant echo through the breeze. The Georgia Sea Island Singers preserved old slave songs of the area and serve as a vital link to the heritage and history of these inimitable environs.
