FedEx's Fred Smith Could Be The Perfect New Owner for the Rams

In our post-draft update, SPF wrote about the murky future of the St Louis Rams.  Since then, they've officially put up the "For Sale" sign leading many people to worry about the Rams returning to Los Angeles.

Last week, the rumor mills started to churn over the idea that Fred Smith of FedEx might pursue a bid for the St Louis Rams.  Smith is known as a long time football fan who tried to bring the NFL to Memphis in years past.  His son, Cannon Smith, was a top recruit who now plays at the University of Miami.  Needless to say, football is in Smith's blood.

Smith has the money and the football passion to be a great NFL owner.  All he needs to do is to sell his minority interest in the Washington Redskins valued at $150 mil and agree on a price with the heirs of the late Georgia Frontiere.  

Keep in mind that Smith wouldn't even have to buy the entire team because St Louis billionaire Stan Kroenke already owns 40% of the franchise and appears to have no interest in selling any of it.  Kroenke also has a right of first refusal to buy the entire team, but NFL rules currently prevent him from becoming the majority owner due to his current ownership of the NBA's Denver Nuggets and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche.

There has been talk about Kroenke getting a waiver from the NFL, and others like Dave Checketts, owner of the NHL's St Louis Blues, have shown interest in the Rams as well.  In all three cases, the Rams are likely to stay in St Louis, which is the most important thing.

So why do we favor Fred Smith?

Smith's home base of Memphis could bring to bear a whole other regional market for the Rams.  For years, Memphis has been a fan stronghold for the St Louis Cardinals baseball team.  Memphis is the home of their AAA team, the Redbirds.  There is already a strong sports connection between Memphis and St Louis.

Fred Smith remains a fixture in the Memphis community.  Smith's deep connection to Memphis could bring in that city's support as well as Arkansas and Ozarks.  The Rams could ultimately enjoy the same regional following that their baseball brethren do.

Both Kroenke and Checketts have shown themselves as loyal to St Louis and as good stewards of sports franchises.  If either wins out over Smith, it will still be good for St Louis.  However, if Smith is truly interested, the NFL and Roger Goodell should push for him to get control of the team.  The NFL needs people that understand college football-hungry areas like Memphis and how to engage this passion for the pro game.

Memphis and its surrounding area may have its AFC team in the Titans, but the Mississippi River corridor, from St Louis to Memphis, could be fertile ground for the Rams for years to come.
