Mediocre is not the worst label in the world (ask the Detroit Lions), but it’s been a long time since this team was considered elite. Under Snyder’s leadership since 1999, Washington has hovered between 5-10 wins even though they have had the highest player payroll during that span. Over the last decade is that the ‘Skins have only made the Playoffs three times, and they have not played in a conference championship game since the 1991 season.

A strategy that has not worked for Washington is signing too many free agents and trading away draft picks. In fact, the ‘Skins did not have a first-round pick in 2003, 2006 and 2008, and they also missed on some top choices like Patrick Ramsay and Rod Gardner. That trend continued this offseason when Snyder signed the aforementioned All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a record-setting contract (a deal that has the organization is facing tampering charges). Washington has also inked guard Derrick Dockery to a big contract and re-signed controversial cornerback DeAngelo Hall, two moves that caused the cap-related releases of Jason Taylor, Jon Jansen and Shawn Springs. Haynesworth is a great player, but the Redskins already had the fourth-rated defense in the NFL last season. They will have to be at least that good again to justify the huge dollars for their mammoth defender, as well as Hall.

The player who may decide the immediate future for Washington is quarterback Jason Campbell. During the offseason, many rumors were rampant of the ‘Skins making a play for a new QB like Denver’s Jay Cutler or moving up in the Draft to take USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. Campbell cannot be feeling very wanted by his current management and you have to wonder how this relationship will play out in 2009. This is particularly strange because head coach Jim Zorn was initially hired as the Redskins OC before being elevated because of his success in developing young QBs. It raises big questions as to whether Zorn's confidence in Campbell is shaken.

In the end, no deals were made and Campbell remains their starter. Washington ended up going with Texas pass rusher Brian Orakpo in the first round, and he will obviously benefit from the presence of Haynesworth. The defense should, yet again, carry the Redskins.

But as the Skins try again to compete in the loaded NFC East, any hopes the Redskins have remain squarely on the offense's ability to improve. Campbell seems to have solid weapons Clinton Portis, tight end Chris Cooley and Santana Moss, but the points were just not there a year ago. The offense will need last year’s top picks- wideouts Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly- to provide some perimeter playmaking for the unit that finished next to last in the NFC in scoring.

With games against St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and Kansas City in the first six contests, the Redskins have a great shot for a hot start. They will have to capitalize on their schedule or face another season of mediocrity and more questions about the stewardship of this storied franchise.
