Buffalo's This Week in Movies, May 22nd, 2009; Terminator, Angels & Demons

Posted: May 22, 2009

Here’s a look at our most recent cinema experiences.

TERMINATOR: SALVATION
is perhaps the best Terminator film to date. Yeah, I know, the original back in 1984 blah, blah, blah. It’s just that Salvation doesn’t thrive on catchy, funny, one liners and sight gags. It a dark, bleak look at 2018, where the adult John Conner (Christian Bale, he of The Dark Knight), is still kicking robot ass and taking names. This time, he has to rescue his own father, Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) who is about 15 years old, while fighting off the forces of evil surrounded by Opie’s daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, a rapper (Common), a half breed cyborg named Marcus (Sam Worthington) and a hot babe named Blair (Moon Bloodgood). The action is virtually nonstop, and there are several (spoiler alert!) scenes that will make fans of the series cackle with glee, including Conner’s “I’ll be back” line,” and a naked cameo from you know who, the terminator who started it all. It’s a pretty nasty, dark vision of the near future. Spooky to be sure. Still, it’s good to know that even in the post-apocalyptic future, there are still a few good old fashioned heroes around. Five Stars.

ANGELS & DEMONS beats the crap out of The DaVinci Code for sheer excitement. The main thing to remember going in is that, while some of these incidents are based on reality, it is still total fiction. But very good fiction, I admit.

Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), the man who cracked history’s most controversial code is back with evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati – the most powerful underground organization in history. Langdon travels to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Let the thrills and mysteries begin.

Ewan McGregor (Star Wars) also stars as Camerlengo in an exciting and powerful film. A five star film.

In OBSESSED, Derek Charles (Idris Elba), a successful businessman, is doing very well, with a great job and a great wife, Sharon, played by Beyonce Knowles . Then in comes a sexy temp worker (Ali Larter) who has her sites on Derek from the very beginning, and all hell breaks loose. She is convinced that she and Charles are destined to be together, and does everything in her power to bed him and take him away from his wife. Unfortunately for her, Derek and Sharon have a real deep love for one another. That, and Sharon will kick your ass if you mess with her man. Pretty exciting, although much of the plot line (crazy woman on steroids) has been seen many times before in many films. Still, it’s a fun flick, and a three and a half star date movie.

Keep it Real. Keep it Southern.
