Random Notes from The Land O' Gritz and Honey
Posted: Jan 06, 2007 Hi gang. The weekend is finally here!I finished reading Skydog: The Duane Allman Story by Randy Poe and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There wasn’t much in it I didn’t already know and I would have loved to see the author gather more new interviews but, all around, it is a good book. I still feel the definitive Allman Brothers Band biography is yet to be written.
Bill Kirchen, formerly of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen has a great new CD out called Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods. It’s great rockabilly and country music, mostly original, but with a soulful, slow version of the old Mitch Ryder classic “Devil with the Blue Dress.”
One of my very favorite artists is Tony Joe White and his latest release Uncovered is one of his best, featuring some heavy hitter friends playing alongside the Swamp King. Eric Clapton does a duet as does JJ Cale, Michael McDonald, the late Waylon Jennings and guitarist Mark Knopfler. It reminds me of an interview I did with Tony Joe a couple of years ago. He told me that he and Mark Knopfler had sat up all night around a camp fire at Tony’s Franklin, Tennessee home playing guitars. The next morning he said he walked out into the yard where the ashes of the fire had cooled and there were guitar licks laying all over the ground. Tony Joe rocks.
W.I.N.D. is a fabulous band out of Italy that love Southern rock. They have recorded a lot of great material with our friend Johnny Neel. A three-piece group, W.I.N.D. is reminiscent of Gov’t Mule and on their new CD Live in the Land of Milk and Honey they mix originals with covers that include “Whipping Post” and “Voodoo Chile.” Superior players, great album.
I’m really looking forward to my road trip to Macon next weekend. The Big House Foundation dinner promises to be fun and my gig at 550 Blues right after that should be a blast. There are rumors of a major jam. Ah yes, the jam. The moments I live for. Look for a report and photos right here in the GRITZ blog.
I am also planning a trip to Nashville later in the month so look for a road report coming your way soon. Meanwhile, do let us know what you think about where we are headed with GRITZ and Swampland. Suggestions are welcomed!
