Rocking from Cleveland, Illinois, to Southern France: Spooner Oldham, Wanda Jackson, and Billy C Farlow

April is a huge month for southern musicians. On Saturday, April 4, my neighbor down the river Spooner Oldham and “the sweet lady with the nasty voice” Wanda Jackson were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Gritz has an excellent interview with Spooner that is not to be missed, and this month the Smithsonian Channel is running a documentary about the life of Wanda Jackson “The Sweet Lady with the Nasty Voice..” If you do not subscribe to the Smithsonian channel, you can see video clips from the documentary on the Smithsonian web site. The blues has never had it better than in Europe these days. Bluesman Billy C. Farlow has been in France since mid March playing concerts and recording with the Mercy Band. Mercy Band is a blues trio out of PACA, France, consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Jean-Paul Avellaneda, J.P.’s son drummer Stephane Avellaneda, and base guitarist and vocalist Bruno Quinonero. Even if you speak no French you will enjoy the video on Stephane’s web site that opens with the music of Robert Johnson and tells the story of a young Frenchman falling in love with the blues. On the Mercy Band/Billy C Farlow site, you can hear Billy C Farlow singing and watch video clips from his first concert in France on March 27. Stephane has also posted a series of new photos on the Mercy photo album site.
When Billy C returns from France in mid April, he will no doubt have many stories to tell. I know he is having too much fun, and I will be waiting to hear all about his trip and to post a conversation with him on Swampland.
