On Tuesday I spoke with my old friend Daniel Hutchens. I wanted him to give me an update on his latest sideband which includes Widespread Panic’s Todd Nance, Jon Mills and William Tonks. Mystery And Manners will report the latest updates regarding this group as they occur. Where else are you gonna get this scoop?
James Calemine: Fill me in on this new thing…is it a band? Is it a collection of musicians coming together for a project? What?
Daniel Hutchens: At this point, it’s just kind of a project or an idea to make a children’s record. The core group of people involved at the outset is me, Todd Nance, William Tonks and Jon Mills. The idea—and we’ve already extended invitations—is to get other people involved whether they want to play on something or contribute a song. The idea is to make it almost a community children’s album with the musicians around town. We’ll see how it develops.
JC: It’s original material, right?
DH: Oh yeah. That’s the main idea, writing children’s songs and our premise of the whole thing was to do a record that kids would like and grown-ups could also listen to…
JC:…With cool licks and hooks in the music…
DH: Exactly. That’s the goal. We’ll see how close we come to the goal (laughs).
JC: Tonight is one of the first few sessions, right?
DH: We’ve had several rehearsals…
JC: How many songs have you written with this in mind so far?
DH: If I’m not mistaken, we’re up to nine songs. It’s eight or nine. I can’t remember. I’d have to look in the notebook.
JC: Is there any name for this group yet?
DH: No, not at this point.
JC: Are there any gigs coming up?
DH: Well, I’d have to be home to tell you the date, but you know Chris Rabold—Panic’s sound guy—is involved with this Canine Rescue Charity. He’s putting together a benefit for that and I think it’s in April. We’ll do a few of these songs. It’s nothing official. Bloodkin is playing that gig as well. Everybody is going to be in town and there doing other projects…
JC: Well, we’ll keep everyone informed as everything develops…
DH: We should do that.
