Less Than Six Degrees of Separation: Deryle Perryman, Blind Albert, David Lyman, and Vietnam
Posted: Mar 13, 2009For my great-grandparents, the war was the Civil War, for my parents’ generation it was WW II, but for my generation, the war was Vietnam. The Vietnam War shaped a generation more sharply than perhaps any other that Americans have fought. This video, A Camera and A Curious Mind, was produced in the summer of 2007 as part of a class project at the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockland, Maine. Alabama born filmmaker Deryle Perryman, the writer and interviewer for the film, was featured on Swampland for his internationally acclaimed documentary about Eddie Hinton entitled Dangerous Highway, Perryman is currently working on a documentary about Vietnam veterans forty years later. The working title of that film is Same Same But Different
The music soundtrack "A Camera And A Curious Mind" was written by Vincent Gabriel (aka Blind Albert), recorded, mixed and mastered at Blind Albert Studios, Warren, Maine, and added in 2008. David Lyman who is interviewed by Perryman on the video is the founder and CEO of Maine Photographic Workshops (now Media Workshops International). This amazing video brings together the extraordinary talents of three men who were in Vietnam at the same time over forty years ago—a filmmaker, a musican, and a photographer.
“I knew Lyman was a Vietnam vet when I went to the workshop,” Perryman said of David Lyman. Perryman, Vincent Gabriel, and David Lyman are all Vietnam veterans. They were all in ‘Nam and yet they never met. Lyman's unit left on Thanksgiving of 1967.. As Perryman said, “I was in Vietnam from 12/24/67 though 12/19/68—a thousand years.”
In 1967, David H. Lyman was a Navy Photojournalist attached to a Seabee Outfit (MCB-71) stationed in Chu Lai, Vietnam. In the summer of 2007, 40 years later, fellow Vietnam vet Deryle Perryman interviewed David as a class project for The Art of The Interview Workshop at The Film Workshops-- the school Lyman founded and ran for 34 years. Lyman founded The Maine Photographic Workshops in 1973, and he was the visionary and Director behind this internationally respected institution for 34 years. In 1975 he established The International Film Workshops, a leading center in film and video training, and in 1996 he founded Rockport College, a conservatory for the world's image-makers and storytellers.
The sound recording on A Camera and A Curious Mind is done by Mark Ulano who won an Academy Award for his sound work on Titanic. The music originally selected for the video was “Mama Told Me Not To Come” by Three Dog Night . So how did that incredible song “A Camera and A Curious Mind” become part of the video?
Gabriel (Blind Albert) said that David Lyman had seen his Vietnam documentary on his web site and had contacted him by email: “he [Lyman] told me about the short documentary that was done about him and wondered if i had any music that i might want to incorporate as a soundtrack for it-----well--i was somewhat familiar with david and i was also interested in checking out the doc ----so i agreed to get some music together for him -----he sent me a dvd with the doc on it and after looking at i was inspired to try and write a song specifically for the doc-----now i have written a lot of songs and at first figured i'd take something i had already written----but decided i needed to write something new.”
And how did Vincent Gabriel get to be Blind Albert? Gabriel said that Blind Albert was born around 1988 when he decided that he needed a fictitious name, a blues name. His middle name is Albert so he needed a first name. Deaf Albert would not work (for obvious reasons) and Fat Albert was taken so he wound up using blind—Blind Albert.. He mothballed the name Blind Albert after the project he was working on was finished, but in 1989 when it came time to put another band together, Blind Albert was just sitting around not being used. These days most people know Gabriel as Blind Albert.
