For Ole Miss and Arkansas (and Nutt and Petrino), It Looks Like a Win/Win

We've all witnessed the media firestorm surrounding Auburn and Tennessee's respective head coaching hires of Gene Chizik and Lane Kiffin.  Like they tend to do, the media took some minor fires of controversy and poured gasoline on them, leaving any remnants of logic and reason reduced to ashes.

Change is never easy, and the stakes are extremely high when it comes to head coaching job in the SEC.  Most of the time, it is hard for someone outside these programs to understand the goals behind the hiring.  In that regard, we decided to take time to defend both Gene Chizik and Lane Kiffin this offseason.  We think that both men deserve a chance to lead their teams, and the evaluation of their work should come a year from now.

We know of what we speak.  Let's take a second to remind everyone that this isn't the first time Tribal Fever has written an "In Defense of" piece regarding an SEC coaching hire.  This "series" actually started last season when the media's favorite SEC punching bag was Arkansas' Bobby Petrino.  We thought it would be interesting to go back and look at the soap opera from a year ago and see how it all turned out.

Bobby Petrino and Arkansas

To refresh everyone's memory, Arkansas alum Houston Nutt left a divided Fayetteville and was quickly swiped up by Ole Miss.  The Hogs soon turned to Bobby Petrino to fill their vacancy.  Despite questions surrounding both hires at this time last year, the 2008 season showed that both schools have found great fits to lead their respective programs for the foreseeable future.

It was a media firestorm of epic proportion when Arkansas hired Bobby Petrino after his controversial departure from the Atlanta Falcons. He tried to explain his side of the story, but hardly anyone was listening as the media bashed the coach and Arkansas’ decision to hire him. 

The reality is that Petrino was 41-9 in four years at Louisville and knows how to succeed at the college level. Swampland was in the extreme minority in defending the Petrino hire, and the good vibes continue to grow after his first season at the helm.

As the 2008 season started, Petrino knew he had a lot of talent (including 3 NFL running backs) to replace.  Getting whipped early  in consecutive weeks by Alabama, Texas, and Florida didn't likely leave a good taste in Petrino's mouth.  However, the Razorbacks recovered to beat Auburn and a ranked (and previously undefeated) Tulsa team.  They also finished strong by beating the 2007 SEC West and BCS Champion LSU Tigers.

However, the real test would come during recruiting, and Petrino produced big time.  The Hogs’ 2009 recruiting class came from all over the country and ranked 15th in the nation according to Rivals. Petrino built Louisville into a power by recruiting well in Florida and Georgia, and he knows he will have to do the same at Arkansas. With transfer Ryan Mallett taking over at quarterback, look for the Razorbacks to be much improved (Point 14) in 2009.

Houston Nutt and Ole Miss

Although the Ole Miss faithful knew they had improved at head coach when they hired Houston Nutt, questions arose about his ability to recruit well enough at Ole Miss to succeed long term. For all of the issues that Ed Orgeron had in heading up the Rebels, he did stock Oxford with excellent talent.

So far, Nutt appears to have allayed any lingering doubts.

First, Nutt delivered in coaching the strong stable of players left by Orgeron as he led the Rebels to a 9-4 record.  His inaugural season in Oxford gained huge momentum with 6 straight wins to finish the season. Those six victories included wins against SEC West rivals LSU and Arkansas, the only win against the BCS Champion Florida Gators, a Cotton Bowl triumph over top-10 ranked Texas Tech, and an Egg Bowl shutout against Mississippi State.

Second, after starting slow in recruiting as he did to start the 2008 season, Nutt and the Ole Miss coaches had a strong late push to finish 18th in Rivals rankings. It will take Nutt’s relentless recruiting work to put the Rebels back on the path of challenging Alabama and LSU for long-term SEC West supremacy, but he and his staff are off to a great start.

The Best Fit

Arkansas and Ole Miss had specific goals for making coaching changes at the end of the 2007 season. 

Ole Miss wants to be consistently competitive in the SEC West with a chance to play in Atlanta in December.  Houston Nutt led a program like that in Arkansas which is why he fits well in Oxford.

Arkansas wants to return to their glory days of the Southwest Conference under coaching legends like Frank Broyles and Lou Holtz.  Most importantly, Petrino was hired to compete for Texas high school recruits like his top notch QB transfer, Ryan Mallett.

So far, so good for both coaches and schools.
