"Fathead" Newman Performs New Years Eve Show Before Jazz Institution Closes Doors

Posted: Jan 01, 2007

On New Years Eve, Dallas, Texas, native David "Fathead' Newman performed at Chicago's oldest jazz club, The Jazz Showcase, before the 59 year old club closed its doors. The Jazz Showcase featured artists--among many others--such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Rollins decades ago. Lack of a jazz network in Chicago forces this venerable establishment to shut down.

Newman's tenor saxophone can be heard on albums with Hank Crawford, Buster Smith, Ornette Coleman, Lowell Fulsom, T-Bone Walker, King Curtis, Ray Charles, Red Garland, Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin, and Dr. John. 'Fathead' Newman's new CD, Life, is due out in 2007.   James Calemine
