Buffalo's This Week in Movies, February 2nd

WIth the Oscars right around the corner, I am happy to say that the ol’ Buffalo himself has seen three of the true front runners during the past couple of weeks, and I wanted to run them down for you so you can get the real skinny on what’s good and what ain’t.

I had been waiting a long time to see The Wrestler. It was released in mid-December, but finally made it to my town last week. Being an old wrestling fan, I was really excited to see a film that dealt with the goings on inside of the phenomenon. The movie didn’t disappoint. Not at all.

While it was really more of a love story and the tale of a former world champion (think Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair) who is now a washed up, there was still some pretty cool wrestling going on, and some pretty nifty insider “secrets” revealed. Talk about a comeback. Not since Robert Downey, Jr. became a cash cow last year with Iron Man has a down and out, former rehab staple blazed his way back to the top like Mickey Rourke. Talk about matching the actor to the role.

Rourke owns the part as The Ram. He makes us believe his pain, both physical and mental. And then there’s Marisa Tomei, a 46-year-old beauty who can hold her own against girls half her age as a stripper who falls for The Ram. Not unlike her boyfriend, she is well aware of her age and that the clock is ticking.

Just an excellent five star film, with an eighties metal soundtrack and a beautiful theme song, written by Rourke’s pal Bruce Springsteen.

I also saw Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Golden Globe for movie of the year, and is rumored to be the leader of the pack for the Oscars. It's the story of two dirt poor brothers growing up in the slums of India, and how one brother winds up a contestant on that countries version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

I try to be cultural. I was prepared to love this movie. But instead, I came away feeling disappointed and empty. I didn’t expect the magnitude of the violence either, but while it was “good enough,” maybe a three star rating, I missed out on what all the hoopla is about.

Frost/Nixon was quite good, and Frank Langella turns in his finest character interpretation since Dracula, playing the role of another blood sucker, Richard M. Nixon. He really carries it off, which isn’t easy, considering us boomers that are watching still have a fresh image of the real Tricky Dick burned into our collective psyche. Great acting all around, especially Michael Sheen as Frost and Kevin Bacon as Nixon’s main man Jack Brennan. Very interesting from a historical perspective, well acted and boasting a fine screenplay. I’d give it five stars for sure.

Now, the one I saw today won’t be winning any golden statues, but it was a grade-A thriller, staring Liam Neeson called Taken. Simply one of the best action flicks I have seen since the Bourne films, with Neeson using gadgets combined with brilliant training and calmness to rescue his daughter who has been abducted while in France to follow the U2 tour. Yeah, I know. Her Daddy tried to warn her, and now she’s being sold as a 17-year-old sex slave to a Sheik. When will these kids learn to listen to their parents? Loads of virtually non-stop action make this one a four and a half star movie ripe for a sequel.

I hope Mickey Rourke wins best actor. I don’t believe The Wrestler is up for best film, so I am pulling for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Be nice if Marisa Tomei won, but Kate Winslet will likely beat her out like she did at the Globes. Should be fun to watch anyway. In closing, go see The Wrestler. It's the best movie of the year so far.
