Atlanta born Chris Robinson is best known as the singer in The Black Crowes. In the mid-80s Chris and his younger brother Rich started the volatile group. The Crowes have toured the world many times and sold almost 20 million albums. Robinson’s love for traditional southern music always appeared in the Crowes’ songs. Robinson serves as one of this generation’s (say anyone born after 1964) token musicians to augment their southern origins into global rock and roll. The Drive By Truckers’ Patterson Hood serves as another example. They defy the outside rock and roll world to label southerners as dumb rednecks...

The great writer Terry Southern wrote this about the Black Crowes in 1992: “For a long time I’ve been trying to get a tight fix on the Black Crowes, some kind of handle. I mean what the hell’s going on here? Rock and roll, yes; with plenty of R and B, yes. Along with some country and western of the Gram Parsons persuasion, and maybe even an occasional genuine soul-bite. All to be expected, of course, in a band generally thought of having replaced The Rolling Stones.

“But there is something else, another and different systemic riff pulsating inside their sound—it is the (almost) inimitable sound of Central Tracks/Niggertown funk. It is the sound where the barbequed chicken and ribs are so hot your eyes water and your face sweats, and you try to cool out the jalapeno with a beer like Black Dallas. It is the sound of Joe Leggins and the Honeydrippers, Lucky Milander, obscure bands like Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy, and singers like Jimmy Witherspoon and Willie Mayon (rendering “My Big Ten Inch” on the Black Cat label)—all artists from whom derive the later immortals: Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry and James Brown.

“It is the sound heard in places like the Silhouette and the Blue Room in West Dallas or Shreveport, decrepit and rundown places where the lights are blue and there is a half-gallon of Sweet Lucy on the tables; crude shed-like structures but jumping and wailing with a kind of vibrant life whose existence is not even suspected in most quarters…”

The Black Crowes toured with rock and roll luminaries such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and Jimmy Page. To some, The Black Crowes represent the quintessential rock and roll band these days. They take pride in their cover songs by covering everyone from Fred McDowell to Buck Owens to Bob Dylan to Gram Parsons. Robinson led the Crowes with classic albums Shake Your Money Maker (legendary Chuck Leavell played keyboards on this CD), The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion, Amorica, Three Snakes & One Charm, By Your Side, Lions and Warpaint over the last 20 years. In the early 90s, the Black Crowes forced people to go back and investigate older music and transcend the ‘hairbands’ of the day. The Crowes never neglected America’s musical roots and they remain true to an organic, old school sound. Their live shows rival any touring band on the circut...

Writer Stanley Booth wrote this about the Crowes in 1996: “The (Crowes) sets range every night, and the performances of the songs change: it’s high-powered jazz. People may compare the Crowes to the Stones, but they have little in common aside from open G-tuning. What Mick used to do was sex; what Chris does is passion, but not sexual passion. Chris is, in fact, a passionate idealist, which is why he has so often offended. He has standards, and he’s quite prepared to defend them. To the death. The Crowes shows are exhilarating, really thrilling. So much good feeling. The band tries to surpass itself each night, and the audience senses it. Chris is deadly serious about the responsibilities he’s accepted for passing on something bigger than the Black Crowes or the Rolling Stones or Elvis Presley. But he’s not solemn about it. The Crowes are not a band of virtuosos, though if they wanted that, they could be; what they are is a great rock and roll band in the tradition of the Stones and the Allmans, creating multiple layers of rhythm, melody, and harmony, proceeding not by schoolbook rules, but by feeling. A certain amount of boldness, if not arrogance, is required. When everybody’s worked up a good sweat and the Black Crowe dances, it’s a good feeling.”

What Robinson is not really known for is his ability to produce recording sessions. In 1993, Robinson produced a band called Thee Hypnotics and several songs for The Kinsey Report. Last year, Robinson produced Gary Louris’ Vagabonds. Robinson moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles in 1994. Ever since then Robinson has served as a nucleus of southern musicians migrating to California such as Texas’ Devendra Banhart, North Carolina’s Jonathan Wilson and by recruiting Mississippi’/Memphis’ Luther Dickinson to join The Crowes.

Jonathan Wilson and Robinson began hosting jams in 2006 at Jonathan Wilson’s Laurel Canyon home, which served as a catalyst of many revolving musicians in music Robinson referred to as “freak-folk” music. At one of these sessions, Robinson met the Crowes new keyboardist Adam MacDougall. Robinson stands as the next rock and roll generation of southerners to move out west as Gram Parsons, Delaney Bramlett, James Burton and Leon Russell did in the 60s. MacDougall spoke of Robinson’s force as a producer on Vagabonds: “Chris is an incredible producer. He never makes you feel like there’s any pressure—ever. At the same time, he manages to get the best performances out of a group of people without them ever knowing it.”

Chris Robinson produced The Jayhawks’ Marc Olson and Gary Louris’ latest New West record, Ready For the Flood. The record is a stripped-down folk-ish record that resonates long after it’s heard. Robinson knew the Jayhawks from the early 90s when George Drakoulias produced Black Crowes and Jayhawks records. Gary Louris recently spoke of the origins of Robinson’s presence on Ready For the Flood: “He is a friend from our days of touring with The Black Crowes back in the 90s. He always treated us well on the road and has great knowledge of folk and where it meets country, soul and rock ‘n’ roll. He happened to be in Minneapolis by chance and met up with us there when we were writing the songs for the record.”

Robinson’s invisible presence can be heard on Ready For the Flood not just for his background vocals or harmonica playing, but some obscure soulful guidance. Olson and Louris will hit the road in the next couple of weeks to promote Ready For the Flood. Meanwhile, Robinson prepares for The Black Crowes recording a new studio album in February and March at Levon Helm’s infamous barn.
