From The GRITZ Vaults: Paul Hornsby On Capricorn Records
Posted: Jan 27, 2009Among the truly legendary Southern Rock producers you will find the name Paul Hornsby. Paul started out as a musician, as a member of The Hour Glass, a pre-Allman Brothers Band group that featured both Gregg and Duane Allman, Johnny Sandlin and Pete Carr.
Hornsby can currently be heard hosting a special edition radio show on SIRIUS Satellite Radio featuring legendary producers. Hornsby will take a musical journey back to the '70's when Southern Rock peaked in popularity thanks largely to Capricorn Records and music mogul Phil Walden. Hornsby will play his favorite tracks and talk about the golden age of Southern Rock, and working with The Charlie Daniels Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Grinderswitch and many others. The show will air on SIRIUS Radio’s Outlaw Country Channel this coming Sunday., Feb 1 at 9 pm ET; and again on Wednesday, Feb 4 at 10 am. It should be pretty great.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Paul for a number of years, and he has some absolutely great stories to tell. In fact, I sat down with him for a great one on one back in 2001, talking about his production on The Charlie Daniels Band’s classic Fire On The Mountain LP.
"Today that album "Fire On The Mountain" is one of the musical high points that I'm proudest of. There have been many other moments, but that one is very strong. After 26 years it still hangs right in there and keeps selling. I suppose among all the records I did, the rival to that one would have to be the Tucker's "Where We All Belong". I thought that was really a classy collection of music. Incidentally, both albums were done back- to -back in 1974. I think just as I was finishing the Tucker LP, we overlapped the beginning of Charlie's album."
Hornsby recalled working with so many great bands, including Grinderswitch.
"Grinderswitch were a great bunch of guys. They had been friends of Dickey Betts whom he had persuaded to come up to Macon. Joe Dan Petty had been an ABB roadie off and on. We had become friends and began to jam a little, so back in 1974 I began to go out to their band house in Perry, Georgia., outside Macon, and kick around a few tunes. They at that time, consisted of two guitars, bass, and drums. I would throw my Wurlitzer in the trunk of the car and go out there and jam to all hours."
Check out the full interview in the archives. Paul recently finished producing two other projects that we are closely monitoring. The Southern Boys Band, featuring the late George McCorkle’s son Justin, and another Spartanburg based band called Jackson Crossing that are sounding mighty fine. In fact, their lead guitarist/singer Rick Willis has recently been seen performing with The Marshall Tucker Band, both at Angelus and on The Simple Man Cruise. Hmmm....... We’ll be watching closely.

Hornsby is a class act. I met him at Marley Brandt's book party in Macon years back and he was friendly and kind. He also rocked out that night!
