Mainstream South Contest Winners Announced

Well folks, the response to our Mainstream South CD giveaway was amazing. Thanks to all who entered. Unfortunately, we only have ten of these autographed editions to give away. I spent the better part of two hours choosing the winners, and have posted them below.

As you can see, and as I stated in the contest rules, creativity and telling us why you want to win is the best way to rise to the top of the heap. There were several other contenders, but they failed to include a mailing address. Pay attention, class. There may be a pop quiz.

Thanks to Steve, Barry Lee and Derek for the great music, and thanks to the GRITZ readers for taking the time to write. We appreciate each and every one of you, and that’s the truth.

THE WINNERS...

Hi, I'm entering this contest because I already ordered the record from CD Baby the moment it was announced. I saw The Rossington Collins Band live at the Rainbow Theater in Denver many years back from the the 3rd row. What an amazing show to see Freebird played live with no vocals and just a spotlight where Ronnie Van Zant would have stood. It sent chills down your spine and you knew that he was there in spirit. The rest of the show was jaw dropping as well, with RCB churning out out one song after another from their Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere record in a very precise and polished manner that only they could achieve. Little did I know that years later I would find Mr. Barry Lee Harwood online at his Heartstrings Cafe webcast which I listened to and participated in for two years. We later became friends and I got to meet him and a whole ton of other Skynyrd fans at the Final Tribute, an event in Jacksonville that coincided with the 20th anniversary of the plane crash which tragically took the lives of so many members of the original band. I told Barry that I'd be in Jacksonville eventually to get the CD autographed by the band but it's hard to take more than one day off of work in this economy without jeopardizing my job. It will be a very long time before I can make the trip. Hopefully MainStream South will do a tour and I'll get to see them live here in Tampa at some point. I've been a Gritz reader for about 5 years and even wrote a few articles which managed to get published in the on-line version. The main article I wrote was a review of The Sarasota Blues festival featuring the late Jeff Healey Band. In that contest I won the Gov't Mule CD/DVD set Rising Low and still play it often. Even if I don't win this one, it doesn't matter because just being able to hear the music is fantastic. I've been in a slump listening to the same ole things over and over lately and this came just in time to start broadening my horizons again. I'm going to tell all my friends on line and off about the new record as well as sending them the link to Gritz. After reading your review of the album, I'm anxiously awaiting the opportunity to somehow hear those notes that will fill my imagination, and as you put it, paint the walls of my mind with bright colors. My musical interests are all over the spectrum, yet you have piqued my curiosity when writing about these three talented individuals who have enjoyed such impressionable careers. I have followed Barry Lee Harwood's path for many years, even before Rossington-Collins, and am so inspired by his persistence through all kinds of trials and tribulations. I hope that I can hear some "notes of freedom" coming from Barry, as he's really hung in there through all kinds of challenges. This letter is replying about the cd contest. I have been a tremendous fan of southern rock for just about my entire life. Music plays a large role in my life, southern rock mostly. Even though I'm not a musician or a singer, music is still very important to me. I am however on the road all the time and I always have some southern rock with me. I think music is really good for the soul. I also have some Rossington Collins Band music, everything that I have been able to find, and I am a really big fan of all of their music. I also have always been interested in artist's solo projects. I have always appreciated everything that these guys have contributed to music. And I am very excited about listening to this album!! I usually never enter any sort of contest and I have never been good at writing anything and my luck has never been worth anything, but I came across the news of this cd and I thought that I would surely have to give this a try. Either way thanks for the opportunity.

I have always been a fan of Barry Harwood! I even have the Alias Contraband album (or as my daughter calls it, the big black CD). When Rossington Collins put out there two albums my favorites were the ones with Barry writing and/or singing (have those on the black CD's too) So Barry and Derek together again has to be a winning combo!

I remember how creative Barry Lee could be on that big ole red Gibson when I first met him in a tiny town in NC where I lived and taught school way back when in the late 70's. I also thought he should play his mandolin more as he could really make that instrument "talk". Some of the finest riffs I ever heard are him playing the instrumental parts on the first Rossington Collins album, AAA, and along with Allen Collins I thought that phoenix would truly come flying out of my stereo equipment! I would be honored to have this new CD, and I wish Barry and Derek and Steve well with this endeavor. I never got the chance to meet Derek Hess, but he also did a fine job on AAA.

I too am a writer. I work daily for the newspaper and at night I put in four hours a night on my novel. I love to listen to instrumental music while I work, soundtracks, Larry Carlton, Django Rhinehardt, Miles Davis. Couple that with my love of southern rock bands, especially Skynyrd and RCB and you’ll see why a fellow author should have some new music to create by.

I’ve been a fan of Rossington Collins from day one. Winning the Cd would enhance my inner Southern rocker, inspire me to play free bird one more time. But Buff Can’t you see what winning this CD would do for me? I’m gonna take a freight train down to the Post office to see if that CD will come to me.
