Stanley Booth Returns From New York City
11/13/08
I spoke with Stanley Booth this afternoon. On Tuesday he returned from the William Eggleston photo exhibit in New York City. Stanley, among other talented folk such as Dennis Hopper, attended the dinner in honor of Stanley's old Memphis friend Eggleston. Eggleston's photos graced many album covers such as Alex Chilton's Like Flies On Sherbet. Booth, Eggleston and Jim Dickinson remain the holy trinity of living Memphis artists.
Also, Stanley told me Luther Dickinson and Steve Selvidge were in attendance one night. I haven't seen Steve since he performed with the amazing Amy LaVere here in Atlanta this summer. Eggleston's photos included his work from the last four decades. The Drive By Truckers were in town to play a gig...so the South was well represented in the Big Apple last week.
On Monday Stanley and I will begin a series of interviews. Since Stanley is one of the few--maybe the only--writer to know The Rolling Stones, Gram Parsons, Furry Lewis, Jim Dickinson, Jerry Wexler, B.B. King, Elvis Presley, Dewey Phillips, Duane Allman, Al Green, Charlie Freeman, Bukka White, Otis Redding and a list too long to print here it's essential his stories are heard. Our first interview will be consisting of Stanley's time around Steve Cropper and Otis Redding, but the topic list is long, and this is just the beginning...so stay tuned.
On Saturday I'll attend The Black Crowes show in Birmingham. That should be a gas, although it may be the last show I see on this tour. It will be good to hang out with Luther again...and any other Crowe struttin' around. I'm still waiting on the transcription for my interview with Widespread Panic's Jimmy Herring, so I can get it out for public consumption. All for today. Photo above is Mr. William Eggleston's work...

The Eggleston exhibit is on my calendar for my trip to NYC one month from today (December 13). I can't wait. Too bad the Truckers won't be there. What an exciting weekend this must have been in the Big Apple. :-)
