Swampland/Mystery And Manners Travel To St. Simons Island for Cultural Celebration

There is not much time to tell this story...Swampland/Mystery And Manners hosted a cultural celebration this weekend on St. Simons Island, Georgia, that coincided with the Georgia vs. Florida football game in Jacksonville, Florida.

Swampland president, Jim Markel, met me in my hometown along with brother in arms--UGA director of the music business program--Bruce Burch, Keith Perissi and Jay Batavia. Keith filmed my interviews with Southern Soul Barbecue proprietors Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp. Also, Bruce and I went on record in front of the camera to be edited later at the UGA television station. My Mom and my girl Robin stopped by to meet these cosmic allies of mine.

The boys enjoyed the barbecue Griffin and Harrison served on this Halloween Friday. The weather was perfect. The seasonal time change was on us all. St. Simons has always served as the meeting place for Georgia fans during the weekend of the football war with Florida. Many island residents attended UGA. Every year, this tranquil coastal island transforms into a cultural celebration all in the name of football. St. Simons played a very important role in American history. In the 1700s, the island was a strategic location to see English ships moving in from Savannah and Spanish fleets approaching from the south. If the English lost the war, we all may be speaking Spanish now.

On camera we had Harrison break down the art form of good barbecue indigenous to this area with illuminations on woodsmoke, sauce ingredients, cooking theories and practices as well as definitive regional traits of good barbecue.

I interviewed Bruce for our second volume of the Swampland/UGA Cultural Revue. Bruce is a songwriting force, and an inimitable leader of the country's leading school for a music business program. I also went on camera to interview the bluegrass band playing at Southern Soul Barbecue on Friday--Cornpone Nation. these interview clips will surface later on YouTube as well as other transmissions through UGA's television station.

The unsung hero of the weekend was Keith Perissi. A great musician and photographer in his own right, Keith kept all filming smooth, evocative and productive. His eye never failed and he wasted no film. I'd like to tip my hat to him. Any task involving Keith...I'm in. He shot classic footage wherever he went.

On Saturday I interviewed another old friend and UGA alumni Michael Gowen at his waterfront location in Brunswick. Proprietor of Southeast Adventure Outfitters, Gowen ranks as one of the most cognizant outdoorsmen of the south. His company allows people to kayak in remote areas of these tidal marshes and estuaries along the coast. I also met Robin's brother in law--Richard Vendetti--who serves as Director of Field Operations for the Southern Shrimp Alliance. A few years ago, Rich wrote and narrarated a film--"A Century of Shrimping"--for UGA which captures the history of the shrimp industry, an essential business on the island's coast. Richard gave me a copy of the film, and I'll write the review of it soon.

We wasted no time in our continual pursuit of essential cultural ongoings. Even though my Bulldogs were stomped like a gang of losers in Saturday's game, we conducted vital work in our overall mission. Footage to come later...
