GRITZ Movie Reviews: Mummy 3, Pants 2 and Pineapple Express

THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR
Brandon Fraiser returns in the third installment of the Mummy series, as he and his wife and -kid (yes, he has a son who looks to be the same age as him) battle the 2000 year old corpse of the evil Chinese Dragon Emperor, played with major Kung Fu by Jet Li.

It’s more of the same, lots of special effects, rotting corpses coming to life, hand to hand combat, black magic, white magic, mummy magic - but the only downside is that the movie drags a bit. Actually, it drags a lot.

Still, Fraiser makes it fun with his comedic timing and one liners, that keep things interesting when they might otherwise take a nose dive. Don’t get me wrong, I mean, I did enjoy the movie. I just felt like it didn’t measure up to the original Mummy picture.

THREE AND ONE HALF STARS

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2
Okay I admit it. I saw the first one and loved it, and now I can say that part two is even better than the first. The four young actresses who star in the movie are all top notch actors, and the way the film moves between each of their individual stories is very cool.

From Tibby’s inability to trust in love to Carmen’s upstaging of her actress friend in summer stock theatre, to Lena’s continued dealing with her mother’s suicide to Bridget’s quest for true Greek love, the movie moves along at a nice clip, with no real down time.

America Ferrera is light years from her Ugly Betty character, and Alexis Bledel, and Blake Lively is adorable, but it is Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia) who steals the show as the heady and punky screen writer/artist who is trying to balance life and death in her head.

When all is said and done, it is a great film about the power of friendship. Apparently the sisterhood can survive anything.

BABEWATCH: Young beauties- Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn and Blake Lively.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS
It’s been a while since I have seen a funnier stoner film than Pineapple Express. Seth Rogen is dominating the field these days, and he and James Franco are the 21st century answer to Cheech & Chong.

When Dale Denton witnesses a murder at the hands of a cop and a drug lord, the chase is on, and what a chase it is. There is quite a lot of killing and violence for a comedy, but that helps to make the movie kind of fresh. I found myself belly laughing several times during the movie.

The two unlikely friends keep surviving one attempt on their lives after another, and if they live, they will be BFFF. (Best f***ing Friends Forever). Funny stuff.
