Now, in the field of pop-rock music, creative song titles are somehow few and far between. If you're looking for really nifty titles, you need look no further than the country music charts. Yes friends, country music. America's own.Now mind you, pop music has had its moments, as with the song title I borrowed for the title of this blog. It's the title of an early seventies song by Randy Edelman. Never heard of him? If only he had gone country.
Country music has given us the immortal song "She Ain't Much to Look At, But She Looks Good Though the Bottom of a Glass." And who could ever forget the hunting strains of "You're So Cold, I'm Turnin' Blue?"
Tender love songs come in all shapes, sizes and forms. Among the most memorable. "My Wife Just Ran Off With My Best Friend (And I Miss Him)." "It Took A Hell Of A Man To Take My Anne, But It Sure Didn't Take Him Long." These are real songs folks, I could never make these up. How about the tender, "Don't Cry Down My Back Baby (You Might Rust My Spurs)." Another favorite is “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chewed Your Ass All Day”
Country songs are honest. "If You Want To Keep The Beer Cold, Put It Next To My Ex-Wife's Heart." They often contain very important philosophical questions. "I Don't Know Whether To Kill Myself Or Go Bowling."
Of course there is always "The Perfect Country Song," (aka: "You Never Even Called Me By My Name") which contains every element of a hit country song, including trains, drinking and prison.
Among my personal favorite country song titles are "I'm Gonna Hire A Wino To Decorate My Home;" “If the Phone Don’t Ring, You’ll Know Its Me;” “I’m So Miserable Without You…It’s Like You’re Still Here;” “If I’d Shot You When I First Wanted To, I’d Be Getting Out of Prison About Now;” and my all time favorite, "You Can Lock Me Up In Jail And Throw Away The Key, But You Can't Keep My Face From Breaking Out."
You can bet your last money, if that one's on the jukebox, I'll pay the quarter. Why, I'd even play it before I played David Allan Coe, and that my friend, is a rarity.
