GRITZ Movie Reviews: Get Smart, The Love Guru Good for Laughs

GET SMART
Steve Carell is one more funny guy, and he does a great job of making the Maxwell Smart character his own, rather than rely on the original Don Adams version. Sure, he tosses a few familiar Adams lines in, (ie: “missed it by that much,” but he is certainly his own agent.

Anne Hathaway is a knockout as Agent 99. Hell, she’s a knockout no matter what role she’s in, but she is cute to the third power in Barbara Feldon’s old role. The dancing scene will not soon leave my mind. The girl has legs for days.

The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, is quickly becoming the new Arnold as a big time movie star, and he has great skills and timing that make the hulky former pro wrestler a natural for comedy. Alan Arkin is as good as you’d expect as the Chief.

The script blends comedy with action - plenty of action. Think Die Hard with a funny bone.

I found Get Smart fun and funny, but it didn’t send me into the stratosphere. Very good. Not great, but very good.

THE LOVE GURU
Mike Myers is at his Austin Powers best as Guru Pitka, an American born guru from India who has a lifelong competition with master guru Deepak Chopra. Pitka is hired by the adorable Jessica Alba to help hockey star Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) get his game back by reuniting him with his estranged wife. The only things that stand in Roanoke’s way are his overpowering Mother (played by Tony Orlando and Dawn’s own Telma Hopkins) and opposing hockey player Jacques Grande (played with great laughs by singer Justin Timberlake) who is now with his wife.

Verne Troyer (Mini Me) returns as Coach Cherkov, and Ben Kingsley is a hoot as Guru Tugginmypuddha.

I know this one didn’t get great reviews, but I laughed from start to finish, as did the 20 other people in the audience for the 12:30 PM matinee.

The movie is chock full of new age word play, old school Bob Hope style site gags and some silly, gross and sick sophomoric humor. Hey it’s fun, sometimes. Every movie doesn’t have the be a think piece.

Funny stuff.
