The Amazing Amy LaVere

The Amazing Amy LaVere & Topanga Days
5/22/08

This evening I conducted an interview with the beautiful and talented Amy LaVere. Amy was born near Shreveport, Louisiana, to musical parents. After years of traveling, Amy settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where she eventually met the legendary Jim Dickinson.

Amy’s latest disc Anchors and Anvils--recorded at Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch--proves a great record. Her remarkable voice emanates a soul beyond what she’s singing…her voice carries emotion. She’s very humble and downplays her roles in I Walk The Line and Black Snake Moan. Amy begins her short tour with the North Mississippi Allstars, and I plan to attend their gig in Atlanta on the 30th for further reports in both camps.

Luther Dickinson’s North Mississippi Allstars have been playing gigs the last couple of weeks before Luther goes back out on tour with the Black Crowes. Speaking of the Crowes, on Monday I’ll interview Adam MacDougall, the Crowes new keyboardist. MacDougall plays the Topanga Days Festival this weekend with his old friend Jonathan Wilson. Also performing at the Topanga Days Music Festival are Gary Louris, Jonathan Rice, and Marc Ford.

I’d like to encourage everyone to seek out Amy LaVere’s latest CD Anchors And Anvils. She’s a very talented lady. Our interview will be up in several days. It’s worth the wait. I’d like to say, any girl who plays music like Amy, records with Jim Dickinson, sings Bob Dylan and reads Cormac McCarthy is a girl after my own heart…she’s a marvel.

Yours In Soul,
James Calemine

Amazing is the perfect word. I have seen Amy perform at the Bohemian Cafe here (not a stone's throw from my humble abode)... She is just that, amazing. No one deserves some Swampland cyber-ink more than little Amy....
