I saw this 4 times within as many weeks when it first came out. And many times since. Whether it's great or junk, who cares. It has so many wonderful scenes. David Blue talking about his experiences in the 60's Village. Sarah and Joan Baez comparing notes on Dylan, while all in the same room. Want to see Allen Ginsberg get his beard shaved off, this is the place. And the Rolling Thunder performances or sublime. I remember going thru many bootleg copies of the Royal Albert Hall, looking for better quality until they finally released them. Something I thought would never happen, so we can always hope R&C will be put out one of these days. Until then, I'll always have my 'unofficial' copy ;-)

Consider: Mr. D's movie was about his divorce from the public. That is, the Dylan to whom the popular press and casual fans were married to was breaking up w/ them. He was trading in the relationship for a horse. sound strange? Yeah. Something in his past about trying to throw the adoring public off his trail with an auto accident. But the Biblical theme of marriage is huge and Mr. D, having used lesser themes from the Bible in his earlier days would save this one for his masterpiece! From the beginning of R&C we are seeing double. How many stayed 'right there with him?' Disillusioned with an unfaithful Amerika his new guard became Jesus (not a bad guard to have!) The image we saw for years was a heavily contrived public persona. ("you know the marriage vow is very sacred" & Samantha Brown) but the better part of who we are is his first true love (& visa versa). Together thru Life indeed. When he takes off the mask it will be interesting to see who testifies at his (& our)trial and what will be said!
